State President Travels
A Humbling Experience and a Testament to the Power of Elkdom
Patricia and I recently had the privilege of visiting the Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center as part of our travels representing the Michigan Elks Association. The experience was both inspiring and humbling, providing a firsthand look at the extraordinary impact of the Indiana Elks Association Major Project.
We were warmly welcomed by Dr. Lee, Director of the Cancer Center, along with Dr. Jennifer Schwartz and members of the research team. They shared how the Indiana Elks Association has invested more than $11 million over the past 70 years into cancer research, physician development, and innovative treatment programs.
The annual support provided through the Indiana Elks Major Project serves as critical seed funding for young physicians and researchers, helping them launch promising careers and secure additional grant funding. The center receives approximately $200,000 to $250,000 each year from the Indiana Elks, allowing groundbreaking research to move forward and helping bring hope to countless patients and families.
During our visit, we learned about remarkable advancements being made in cancer treatment and detection. Researchers are utilizing artificial intelligence to identify cancer risks years before symptoms appear, developing personalized therapies tailored to individual patients, and advancing immunotherapy treatments that continue to transform outcomes for cancer patients.
Dr. Schwartz shared her passion for finding a cure for cancer, stating that her ultimate goal is to "put herself out of business." Her dedication, along with the commitment of the entire medical and research team, was truly inspiring. It was evident that the support of the Indiana Elks is making a meaningful difference every day.
This visit served as a powerful reminder of the impact Elks can have when we unite behind a common cause. Through charitable giving, volunteerism, and service, we help create opportunities, advance research, and improve lives.
Patricia and I left with a renewed appreciation for the work being accomplished through the Indiana Elks Major Project and a deep sense of pride in the spirit of Elkdom. The compassion, generosity, and commitment demonstrated by the Indiana Elks Association exemplify our Order at its very best.
Fraternally,
