The West Brownsville Lions Club wanted to honor the birthday of the Lions' founder, Melvin Jones. The story began when Melvin Jones saw the social problems caused by World War I and rapid industrialization. As a Chicago businessman, he invited business clubs from across the United States to a meeting, which led to the creation of the Association of Lions Clubs. Melvin Jones' personal code was, "You can't get very far until you start doing something for somebody else."

On Thursday, January 8, 2026, Lions District 2-A3, Immediate Past District Governor, Dr. Joe Hinojosa, inducted five new Lions into the West Brownsville Lions Club. They are: Lions Richard Hitchcox, Robert Saenz, Enrique Cruz, Mark Paredes, and Nathan Watson. The “new” Lions are now part of the world’s largest and most active service club, with over 1.4 million members in more than 49,000 clubs across over 200 countries and regions. Their membership will help us support people in need both in our community and around the world.

On Friday, January 9, 2026, we provided a monthly dinner to help feed men, women, and children who are experiencing personal hardships, an initiative called “La Posada” at the Good Neighbor Settlement House. On Friday, we fed over 80 people (men, women, and children)…the West Brownsville Lions Club have been providing this humanitarian service for over 45 years.

West Brownsville Lions Club has another “Star” in our ranks…She is Lion Laura Serna Marquez, who orchestrated another excellent service opportunity for “The Rainbow Room” in Brownsville, Texas. This agency provides essential supplies (clothing, diapers, toys) for children in crisis due to abuse or neglect. Lion Laura went around asking for donations and also using her own resources to purchase items for the Center. Lion Laura stated that “these children have already been through an awful experience. They deserve to own a toy, shoes, and whatever else they need”. We are here to Serve!!!!

Christmas came a little early for 35 children here in Brownsville, Texas. We distributed gifts on Monday, Dec 22, 2025, at the Kingdom Connection Worship Center in Brownsville, Texas. An excellent initiative that was spearheaded by Lion Martha Cramer.
