NW Women's Chorale

NW Women's Chorale NW Women's Chorale was seeded in 2006 to offer women the opportunity to master and perform fine choral music. Every good thing begins with an idea. JOY A.

It supports a wide range of musical opportunities for its members along with outreach to encourage other women in their musical pursuits. In 2006 the idea to develop a chorus of women’s voices on the Olympic Peninsula was seeded by Choral Director Joy A. Lingerfelt, and 11 women who loved to sing responded. In the two decades that have passed, the group has evolved into a 501c3 non-profit with a s

emi-professional sound and over 20 SSAA voices. In addition to their love of music, the members of NWWC are bonded by a common goal expressed in the group’s mission statement:

The underlaying mission of this corporation is to offer women the opportunity to master and perform fine choral music, to expose the community to great music beautifully performed, and to share our knowledge and experience with other women, especially the young. The organization shall seek to provide musical and outreach opportunities for its members by actively supporting a wide range of singing opportunities, which may include full chorale, small ensemble, and solo singing either a ca****la or accompanied. As part of its outreach, concert proceeds not absorbed by operating expenses contribute to an annual scholarship selected from local applicants endeavoring to pursue higher education in music as well as experiences for the Chorale members to broaden their exposure to choral singing. But at the heart of it all is the music. Each Fall and Spring the Chorale presents a concert comprised of pieces that challenge even its most trained vocalists. The concert lineup never disappoints in touching hearts with a global and cultural diversity, humor and beauty. The Chorale is proudly led by the talented Joy A. Lingerfelt as Director with Kristin Quigley Brye as her gifted Collaborative Pianist. The Chorale is privileged to have such talent at the helm. LINGERFELT, Director

Joy A. Lingerfelt is the founding director of NW Women’s Chorale, starting the group in 2006. With advanced Music degrees from Southern Illinois University and Pacific Lutheran University, Ms. Lingerfelt also served as chorus master in establishing the Port Angeles Symphony Chorus. A member of the American Choral Director’s Association, Ms. Lingerfelt is always on the lookout for innovative, well-crafted music that resonates both with the soul and the intellect. That, along with a distinct passion for exploring distant lands. KRISTIN QUIGLEY BRYE, Collaborative Pianist

Kristin Quigley Brye holds degrees in Horn and Collaborative Piano/Vocal Coaching from Pacific Lutheran University and North Carolina School of the Arts. She was Music Administrator and Assistant/Cover Conductor at Anchorage Opera for 6 years and has been repetiteur for Tacoma Opera and Reno Opera in addition to a founding member of the Pacific Brass Quintet. She is presently an adjunct professor of Piano at Peninsula College, and the Director of Music at First United Methodist Church. Auditions for NW Women’s Chorale are held each Fall and Spring following that season’s concert. It is requested that those interested in participation attend a concert prior to inquiry to understand the type of music you will enjoy with us and the level of challenge. For information on joining or to make a donation, please contact Joy Lingerfelt at [email protected].

🎶 MEET OUR MEMBERS - KATHY WRAITH, 2ND ALTO 🎶

After attending our Broadway in the Basement fundraiser in 2025 and then that Spring’s Concert—not once, but twice because she loved it so much!—Kathy decided to join the fun in the Fall. You'll now find her rumbling those low notes for us as an Alto II where she serves as section leader. In addition, she coordinates our C-Note program for donations to the chorale.

Kathy has been singing since her youth. During her 35 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, she performed with multiple choirs and appeared in many musical theater productions. She and her husband of 40 years, a retired veterinarian, enjoy a lively collection of animals on their 2½-acre home in Sequim. These days that includes two Cardigan Corgis and a Golden Retriever. Kathy jokes that she was also "dating a Golden Retriever" when she first started dating her husband!

Having retired from a career in finance management helping start-up companies grow, she is able to focus on more of her passions—including travel. She says she was bitten by the travel bug during her first overseas trip at age 50 when touring Lithuania, Latvia, Finland, Russia, and Estonia with her son's choral group. She now makes it a point to take an overseas trip every year.

Welcome, Kathy! We're so glad you decided to join us.

At our concert last week we recognized two members who have participated in NW Women’s Chorale the entire 20 years it has existed, i.e., Lucy Nordwell and Judy Moilanen (plus our fearless leader, Joy, who started the whole thing!) and gifted them with a sweet treble clef broach. They both play instrumental roles in the function of Chorale and we appreciate them so much.

Every member has a personal story that has led them to our beautiful area and participation in Chorale. This summer you will see more frequent introductions to these awesome ladies as we rest from choir activities and associated news. I bet you’ll find you have a lot in common!

Thank you Windermere Sequim for supporting your community with your reader board! With your help of getting the word out, we had a nearly full house at Saturday’s Sequim performance even though there were so many other activities that day. And our audience told us they loved it! Happiness! 🥰 Looking forward to presenting a repeat performance Monday 5/11 @ 7 pm in Port Angeles for those who missed it. Tickets available at https://nwwc.ludus.com

For those of you living in or near Sequim, you perhaps have been rallying to have our concert in Sequim, as we have done on occasions in the past. It's this Saturday. Tomorrow! Yes, there IS a parade in town, as well. And that will create a few road detours, no doubt, but not really a reason to stay home. Give yourself a bit more time to find the open roads, knowing that we are there, wanting to fill your ears and hearts with some beautiful music. I think the reward is worth the few extra blocks you have to go. Better yet, ask a neighbor and carpool together!
I look forward to meeting you there! -Joy

🎶 NWWC TO PREMIERE NEW COMPOSITION MAY 9 AND 11 🎶

We are excited to share that NW Women’s Chorale will premiere a brand-new choral composition commissioned especially for us with one of our favorite composers, Rosephanye Powell!

In March 2025, our conductor, Joy Lingerfelt, along with many NWWC members, attended the American Choral Directors Association Conference in Dallas, Texas. There they heard stunning performances by premiere choirs featuring award-winning new works.

Joy says she was so moved by the “sweet sadness and striking beauty” of Rosephanye Powell’s mixed voice arrangement "Kyrie Eleison" that at its conclusion she lept up to go find Dr. Powell at her publisher’s booth. In Joy’s words: “I said—barely even greeting her properly—Please let me commission you to set this for a women’s group! I’m just starting my 20th year since founding our group and would love to give it to them as a thank you.”

After months of collaboration and many emails, this beautiful new arrangement indeed became part of the NWWC music library.

We are so honored to receive this precious gift from Joy and eagerly anticipate bringing it to you as the first audiences to receive it May 9th and 11th. What a special gift for us in so many ways. Thank you so much, Joy! 💜

How fun! At last night's rehearsal we had the chance to sing one of the songs from our upcoming concert for its composer, Sherry Blevins! Who gets to do that? Bucket list… ✅

Since Sherry lives on the East Coast, we performed it virtually—and what a treasure that was for all of us. Thank you, modern technology!

Sherry’s inspiration for “When I Become an Old Woman” comes from the beloved poem “Warning” by Jenny Joseph—you know the one… “When I am an old woman I shall wear purple.”

It’s a delightfully fun piece and just one of many moments in the program guaranteed to bring an involuntary smile—and probably a good chuckle. But given the hair color of many of us in the choir, we’re wondering just how much older we have to be before having permission to fully embrace the indulgences we’re singing about 😉

If you haven’t grabbed your concert ticket yet, now’s the time! You can choose to attend in Sequim at 2 pm, Saturday 5/9 or in Port Angeles at 7 pm, Monday 5/11. Purchase tickets here: https://nwwc.ludus.com

And don’t miss our pre-concert chat at 6:45 PM on Monday as Joy shares more about the music we’ll be singing!

You are invited to step away from the cacophony of daily living and experience the magic of one grand piano and 24 voices synchronizing hearts and harmonies in the joy of making music—for you. Our Spring concert will take you on a musical journey through life, exploring its facets of beauty, heartbreak, wonder, and humor. The program is as musically diverse as the selections’ composers and will introduce newer compositions while reviving old favorites—even has a little Broadway just for fun.

Performances will be held in Sequim on May 9th and Port Angeles on May 11th. Click on the concert event listed in our Events page at https://www.facebook.com/NWWomensChorale/events to find all of the details you’ll need. (On phone follow link further by clicking More then Events). You can purchase tickets in advance by visiting https://nwwc.ludus.com/ or by clicking on the QR code below.

We hope to see you there! And thank you for your support.
