A few of our scouts worked on fire building skills tonight. When we had finished lighting fires, we started the Tenderfoot Rank fitness requirements.
Walk/run 1 mile- time
Pushups- how many in 60 seconds
Sit ups- how many in 60 seconds
Sit and reach- how far can you stretch

We will check these again after 30 days of practice and mark any improvement.

Fitness requirements are included in the Tenderfoot rank to introduce young Scouts to healthy, lifelong habits, build endurance for outdoor activities, and teach goal-setting, focusing on personal improvement rather than absolute strength.

This weekend our Troop camped at Humiston Woods Nature Center and worked on fire building. The Scouts made foil dinners over the fire, and then finished Saturday night with a Flag retirement ceremony.

A flag retirement ceremony is held to respectfully dispose of U.S. flags that are faded, torn, or otherwise "unserviceable," ensuring they are not treated with disrespect. Mandated by the U.S. Flag Code and often performed by veterans or scouting groups, this solemn, official ceremony usually involves burning, honoring the flag's service and the nation's ideals.

This last weekend we travelled to Camp Wokanda in Peoria Park District. We stayed in a cabin and worked on our fire building skills.

The Scouts planned the menu and cooked French toast, mostaccioli, walking tacos and a cherry cobbler. We ate like royalty!

We also finished up the Totin Chit requirements, learned about axe yards and chopped some wood with axes and bow saws.

It was a great weekend!

First Aid is an important skill to learn, so it is highlighted in many of the ranks.

Here, scouts from Troop 1876 are learning how to transport someone with a tarp and 2 poles.

During this meeting they also learned how to do a four arm carry, how to use first aid equipment, and became much more familiar with a troop first aid kit.

If you have a child that is 11-17 years old that would like to be in scouting, go to BeAScout.org to find out more information on our Pontiac Scouts BSA troops.
