Remember: by July 2026, all e-bikes must be registered and insured. 🚲🏍️

After that, to ride an e-bike in NJ you must be at least 15 years old and have a valid driver’s license or a motorized bicycle license/permit.

🚲 New Jersey E-Bike Law

Effective: January 19, 2026

New Jersey is rolling out statewide rules for electric bikes to improve safety and make expectations clearer for riders and drivers.

🔢 E-Bike Classes (Now Clearly Defined)
Class Max Speed Notes
Class 1 20 mph Pedal-assist
Class 2 20 mph Throttle allowed
Class 3 28 mph Treated more like a motorized bicycle
🪪 Licensing Rules

To legally ride an e-bike in NJ, you must:

✔ Have a valid NJ driver’s license
OR
✔ Be at least 15 years old and get a motorized bicycle license.

Age Breakdown

Under 15: ❌ Cannot operate an e-bike
15–16 years old: Must have a motorized bicycle permit
17+: Driver’s license or motorized bicycle license required

🚲 Rental Exception

Riders 16 and older using a government-contracted shared e-bike system (like town bike-share programs) can ride without a license.

🏷 Registration Requirement

All e-bikes must be registered with the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC).

🛡 Insurance Requirement

By July 2026, e-bike owners must carry liability insurance, similar to motor vehicle coverage.

⏳ Six-Month Grace Period

From January 19, 2026, riders have six months to get:
-Registration
-Proper licensing
-Insurance

This window is meant for education and smooth compliance, not punishment.

👮 Enforcement Approach

Law enforcement is expected to focus on:
✔ Education first
✔ Voluntary compliance
✔ Stopping clearly unsafe riding

Violation fine: $50
Statutes: N.J.S.A. 39:4-14.16 – 39:4-14.17

The Boys & Girls Club of Northwest New Jersey is running Indoor Soccer in Pequannock — a great option to keep kids active, learning, and having fun indoors.

• This cohort will become the PTHS Class of 2039
