"The chairman of the Polk County Board of Education called it a 'historic day' for the county's educational system.

The Polk County Commission, by a vote of 5-0, approved a resolution allowing $400,000 from the county's fund balance to be used for the purchase of a plot of land located at 541 George Bates Road.

Totaling 56 acres, the property is located to the rear of and adjacent to Polk County High School.

School board members envision the site to eventually become a new elementary/middle school complex; however, Director of Schools Dr. James Jones said the process of building a new school would not be a fast one."
