Sorry for the absence everyone, I’ve been dealing with some things lately and just haven’t been able to get to my social media posting. However, I wanted to share something I found in the wild today! One of my favorite little “cheap” and fun ways to exercise your brain and coordination! While we were in Menard’s I found a box of these little cube puzzles and it had one of my favorite types where you have to get the little metal balls to balance on the holes. I, of course had to stand there and play with it for a minute. All of these fun little gadgets were only $1! If you’re ever out and about and find something like this, pick one up for you and your loved ones, or consider donating some to my “Brain Bag” project! Have a brain healthy day y’all!

Day 4 of the 6 Pillars of Brain Health! Be Social!

I personally am VERY social lol. Probably too social sometimes. But it is very important for our brains to be out there and communicating with other humans and even animals? Why do you think we have therapy animals?! Get out and strike up a conversation with a friend or stranger. You may learn something new, or catch up on old memories (which is good for your brain too 😉) Join a club or even start one! The possibilities are endless!

What are some of your favorite ways to “be social”? Share in the comments!

Hey everyone! Sorry I have been away for a little while! With Easter and pageant prep, I have been a very busy person! However, how about Day 3 of the 6 Pillars of Brain Health!?! Eat Smartly! Did you know that Tuna is good for your brain? It is high in omega-3 fatty acid (DHA and EPA), which are essential for brain structure, nerve cell communication, and improving cognitive function. It also provides nutrients like selenium and Vitamin B12 that support overall neurological health. I have always liked tuna, even as a kid! I used to take in for my lunch and the other kids at school would always laugh and give me a hard time but I didn't care because I would tell them it was good for my brain. (No joke, I really did haha.)

My favorite way to eat tuna is a simple tuna salad with crackers. Here's my recipe for you to try!

One can or pouch of chunk light tuna in water
One dollop of mayonnaise (or more if you wish)
One Spoonful of sweet pickle relish (or more if you wish)

Mix it all up and refrigerate if you want it colder or just eat it right then!

Eat with crackers or veggies or on a bed of lettuce or on a sandwich!

Day 1 “Get Moving!”
I love to dance and have recently taken up working out in the mornings! What’s your favorite way to “get moving”??

A little bit about the origins of me...

From the desk of Momma Susan:

At age 34, I got a big surprise. After being told I would most likely never get pregnant, I found out I was expecting in November of 1991. The news was met with mixed emotions. I was excited but also scared. I had always felt it was necessary to take good care of oneself before getting pregnant and while being pregnant. I had been taking the pill and over the counter meds for sinus problems.

Being concerned, my doctor made an appointment to go to Ohio State for some testing. At the time, ultrasound technology was at its beginning. So, I had was considered an advanced ultrasound. That ultrasound showed no problems with the baby's development.

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. In early April I had two ultrasounds at the local hospital to make sure Brittany had not gained too much weight. It is common for babies born to women with gestational diabetes to have a high birth weight. (She did not by the way.)

After the tests, I received a call from my doctor telling me that the ultrasounds had shown a problem with her head. That there would be a good chance that she would need to be airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Columbus immediately after birth. Her head was too big, and she would have serious developmental problems.

I truly felt there was no problem, that she would be fine. Our pediatrician, Dr. Kim, would be in the delivery room. He said the best words I have ever heard in my life after examining her after she was born. “There isn’t anything wrong with this baby.”

Could this have been some kind of early indication of my birth defect on a fuzzy early 1990’s ultrasound and we just didn’t know it? To be continued...

I’m a little late today but day 2 of the 6 pillars of Brain Health! Day 2: Seek out mental challenges! I love doing a good crossword puzzle, or even a fun jigsaw puzzle. I remember the wooden ones my Mom had in her Kindergarten classroom! What’s a fun mental challenge you enjoy? Let me know in the comments!

Welcome to Think Fit with Britt! My name is Brittany Sayre, and I am 33 years old. This is my brand-new passion project that was inspired by my own brain health and wanting to share fun ways to keep your brain functioning at its highest potential! Let me tell you a little bit about myself and my story.

When I was eighteen years old, I fell down some steps while hiking and began having headaches which prompted a CAT scan. The results of that scan would change my life forever. That was when we learned that I had a birth defect called “Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum”. The Corpus Callosum is the largest white matter structure in the brain, consisting of a thick band of over 200–300 million nerve fibers (axons) connecting the left and right cerebral hemispheres. Located in the center of the brain, it acts as the primary, high-speed communication pathway (or neural bridge) between hemispheres, enabling coordination of sensory, motor, and cognitive information. Agenesis means the failure of an organ or tissue to develop during embryonic growth, resulting in its complete absence at birth. This came as a total shock to us as I had never shown any symptoms that suggested anything resembling this defect. ACC affects 1 in every 4,000 births. It can cause developmental delays, (walking, speaking), clumsiness, poor hand-eye coordination, social difficulties, and seizures. Many individuals have normal intelligence, but some experience learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and social difficulties, often likened to Autism Spectrum Disorder. I am extremely lucky to have very few symptoms. We didn’t even notice any until after my diagnosis and we started putting things together.

One thing that stood out to us was that I seemed to have relatively decent balance and coordination for this defect. We strongly believe that this is because I began dance lessons at two and a half years old, as well as got my first pair of snow skis at that age. My Mom also has her Masters in Early Childhood Education and not only is she the best Mommy in the world, but she knew exactly how to raise a small child to learn and grow. I truly believe this extra boost of learning at a very young age helped my brain development immensely. I have said for many years “Dance saved my life.” I firmly attribute my over 30 years of dance to having the coordination, balance, and ability to function I have today.

Just when we thought we had things figured out, in October of 2024, I was sent to the Emergency Room with high blood pressure and headaches. This is when I would receive another diagnosis that would change my life. This is when we found out that I had Hydrocephaly, dilated ventricles, and a blood vessel had burst in the back of my brain. I experienced my first ambulance ride and hospital stay, and once again found out I had another birth defect. I was told that I was born with “Congenital Hydrocephaly” or “Water on the Brain”. Hydrocephaly is an abnormal accumulation of Cerebrospinal Fluid within the brain’s ventricles. Mine was present at birth, yet nobody picked it up on any scans until I saw the specialist during my hospital stay. Upon further testing and studies I was diagnosed with vestibular migraines and vertigo. I underwent several months of balance therapy to try to combat that and treat it and began several new medications. I also see a neurologist to keep a check on my brain now.

So what does all that have to do with my project? Well, I want to advocate for invisible birth defects like mine, and I want to make sure people know that it is easy to keep their brain healthy! There are so many fun and simple activities that you can do to keep your brain working and engaged, young, and quick thinking. I want to provide a “one stop shop” for exercises, resources, information, activities, recipes, and some fun along the way, all for the health of your brain! I plan to post tips and tricks, videos, facts, and even guest posts for everyone. I want to do some special collection drives for fidget toys and memory games or puzzle books and items of that nature to donate to local schools, nursing homes, and veteran’s associations. I plan on making “brain bags” full of fun items to give your brain a workout. I am so very excited to share this journey with you! Join me, shall you?
