Watershed Guardians

Watershed Guardians We challenge you to get to know beaver and all they do to help your watershed! We're based in the Portneuf River watershed.

Each year, we sponsor, "BeaverCount", where volunteers learn about the watershed and do a mid-winter survey of selected tributaries on snow shoes and skis. We also sponsor "BeaverDamJam-Idaho", a music event to raise awareness and funds to keep doing our work.

πŸ¦«πŸŒ•βœ¨οΈ The Beaver Supermoon is here! πŸ¦«πŸŒ•βœ¨οΈ

Get out there and view (or dance!) with the biggest, brightest supermoon of the year.

November's full Moon is known as the Beaver Moon because it's traditionally the time when beavers are most active in nature, preparing for the harsh winter months ahead. Soon beavers will take shelter in their lodges, having laid up sufficient food stores.

During the North American fur trade, it was also the season beavers were trapped for their thick, winter-ready pelts.

Each of the monthly full Moons has a nickname tied to early Native American, Colonial American, and European folklore that reflects annual events or changes in nature.

Other November Moon Nicknames

πŸŒ• Digging or Scratching Moon (Tlingit): the time animals forage for fallen nuts // shoots and bears dig their winter dens

πŸŒ• Deer Rutting Moon (Dakota & Lakota): the time when deer seek mates

πŸŒ• Whitefish Moon (Algonquin): the spawning time for this fish

πŸŒ• Frost Moon (Cree & Assiniboine) or Freezing Moon (Anishinaabe): the onset of colder days ahead

One of our friends and a fellow sent us this awesome video. Which gives us the perfect excuse, now that we're into the season of Thanksgiving, to talk about some of the reasons we need to thank our local Beaver populations.

Beaver dams clean water by creating a natural filtration system that slows down water flow, this allows sediment to settle into the bottom of the pond or the dam itself. They also promote microbial processes that break down contaminants. Their ponds also help recharge , improving water quality downstream and substantially builds up our local .

Interesting bit of Idaho history gobbled up by DOGE.

When a large-scale restoration effort was halted by feds, history could not be forced back into the archives.

Here's a shout out to the fantastic bands who played at this year's beaverdamjam-Idaho: The Wolverines, tearin' it up; Steelhead Redd with Orla O'Connor swimming upstream with precision and flavor; Catagory3 with hurricane shredding guitar and gail-force vocals (who was that lady) and Walther's Wallpaper who kept the crowd rocking with their eclectic funk right up to close. Thank you all so much! Mike
