Fear can be debilitating.
We try to control out of fear.

A better way is growth-oriented action:
-Read and learn about addiction. PAL recommends The Four Seasons of Recovery, written by PAL founder, Mike Speakman.

-Watch videos by trustworthy experts in the substance use disorder arena. PAL has a YouTube channel with many expert trainings. https://www.youtube.com/c/ParentsofAddictedLovedOnes

-Attend support meetings. PAL has free nationwide peer support meetings for parents, complete with trained facilitators.

Banish fear and focus on action. It works.

We're here to help.

👆🏼True👇🏼

I know… you might be thinking, “but she isn’t CAPABLE of accepting responsibility. She’s chemically dependent! “

My question for you is, if not now, when?

It’s highly likely that she won’t exercise responsibility if she is never given the chance. She’ll let you do it for her, which is not adult behavior.

What does it look like to expect responsibility? Here are a few ideas.
1 - Allowing him to make his own appointments
2 - Allowing her to get and pay for her own cel phone
3 - Giving him the option to choose his treatment center

If he can’t take responsibility for these things, then he’s just not ready. That doesn’t mean you move in and take over. Just stand down. If he says he can’t do it, you might say:

”I believe in you and I know you’ll find a way.”
“I know you’ll take care of that because you’re an adult.”
“It might be hard, but I’m betting on you to succeed.”

This can be tough friends. Need help with this? PAL is here for you with free support meetings, peer support, and addiction education.
