April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. A time to pay attention to what too often goes unseen and unspoken.
Each year, millions of children in the U.S. are reviewed for safety. Over 3 million cases are investigated, and more than 540,000 children are confirmed victims.
But numbers only tell part of the story.
I share this not only as part of the Dream Makers team, but as a survivor of child abuse. My story changed because people paid attention. They used their eyes, their ears, and their voices when I could not. Mandatory reporters chose to act, and it changed my life.
Not every experience is reported. Not every story is believed. Some voices are never fully heard.
Many of the youth we serve have lived through abuse and neglect and carry those experiences as they step into adulthood on their own.
This is why awareness matters.
Learn the signs. If you suspect something, say something. You can call the Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-4ACHILD. It is available 24 hours a day and confidential.
You can also be part of the healing. Show up. Support. Care. Whether it is someone you know or a young person working to rebuild their life, your presence matters.
Every child deserves to feel safe, supported, and seen.
Your awareness could change a life.
