Zena spent the day yesterday helping Mom at the VA hospital. She showed again how much she loves her job. A man that is the hospital advocate said she was a perfect specimen for a service dog.

Way to go Zena!

Mutts on a Mission is profoundly honored to share that the family of Julie Maria Zinda-Nunemaker recently held a benefit in her memory and raised $2,000 in support of our mission.

Julie was the mother of two boys and a deeply loved daughter, niece, cousin, and friend. She had a big heart—not just for people, but for animals as well—and cherished her cats and dogs. Anyone who knew her knew that compassion came naturally to her.

This gift is not just a donation. It is a legacy of love.

We promise that these funds will be used thoughtfully and responsibly, in ways that truly honor Julie’s spirit—helping dogs in need, supporting the humans who love them, and carrying forward the kindness she so clearly lived by.

To Julie’s family and loved ones: thank you for thinking of Mutts on a Mission during such a difficult time. Your generosity means more than words can express, and Julie’s memory will live on through the lives she continues to touch.

When Veteran Jeff learned that his service dog in training needed unexpected surgery, Mutts On A Mission stepped in to help. Too many dogs are surrendered simply because their Veterans or First Responders can’t afford the care they need.

We were proud to provide this support to someone who has served our country with honor.

Some stories remind us exactly why we do this work.

Before our dear friend and founding member Karen passed away from cancer, she had one last request for us:
“Find a dog for my friend Kelly.”

We took that promise to heart. We weren’t going to place just any dog — not for Karen, not for Kelly. So we waited. We said no to dog after dog, holding out for the one who carried the calm, gentle spirit that matched what Karen wanted for her friend.

And then came Zena.

A rescue with a soft soul, a steady presence, and a sweetness you feel the moment she looks at you. The kind of dog Karen would’ve chosen herself.

We brought Zena into our program, and today…
Zena was officially adopted by Kelly.
A full-circle moment done the right way.

But here’s the part that stopped us in our tracks:
After we had already taken Zena in, we learned she was born on the very day Karen passed away.

Some people call that coincidence.
We call it Karen’s final gift finding its way home.

Welcome to your forever, Zena.
Kelly — thank you for trusting us to honor Karen’s wish.
And Karen… we carried your request forward. We hope we made you proud.

Kelly recently attended an American Legion meeting with her service dog in training, Zena — who calmly rested by her side the entire time. 🐾

This was a big milestone in Zena’s public access training, and a beautiful example of the trust and teamwork between this amazing pair. Situations like this are about more than obedience — they’re about confidence, connection, and the quiet support that service dogs provide.

We’re incredibly proud of both Kelly and Zena for how far they’ve come and can’t wait to see what they do next together!
