Plumas Lake Citizens for Responsible Taxes and Bonds
The Plumas Lake Community will see FIVE local school bonds and ONE State School Bond on their November ballots. The Plumas Lake Elementary School District will again be placing 3 school bonds on the November 2024 ballot. The PLESD Board claims to have the community sentiment at heart, yet they continue to attempt bond measures that the communit
y has repeatedly rejected. Wheatland High School will be placing 2 school bonds on the November ballot, specific to Plumas Lake. A school bond is a tax and will increase property taxes. We cannot continue to pay higher property taxes that will not end for decades, with new ones sure to be requested in subsequent years. The costs of housing, gas, utilities, food, insurance (car, homeowners and medical) continue to increase, and household incomes have not kept up with inflation. Over 41% of students in the Plumas Lake Elementary School District live in a home setting that qualifies for reduced or free meals; Can these families really afford more taxes? The State’s School Facility Bond Program (matching funds for bonds) is out of funds. The school districts are counting on the State School Bond passing in November. Why isn’t the Plumas Lake School District looking at other options? Modify existing schools? Add classrooms space? Increase development fees? Both Marysville Joint Unified and Yuba City Unified recently announced that they will be increasing developer fees for facilities due to overcrowding. Year-Round School Schedule? Unifying with Wheatland High School? Property taxes in Plumas Lake are already higher than most local areas. Any increase in property values from building new schools will be offset by increased property taxes. Higher property taxes will increase the overall cost of buying/owning a home in Plumas Lake, which will push buyers out of the market, and they will buy in other areas with lower taxes. This will lead to a decrease in demand, which leads to a decrease in home prices. For those that claim opponents of additional bonds do not support education – this is simply not true. We do support education and education should include lessons in fiscal responsibility and budgeting. Plumas Lake property owners, within the district boundaries, are currently paying on SIX (6) school bonds. Most of those bonds will mature (paid off) for another 25 plus years. If the proposed school bonds pass in November, we will be paying on ELEVEN school bonds!
