Update to all the Well-Wishers,

Your prayers, healing energies, and good will gifted Eric the gift of life! Eric went in for kidney transplant last night. Surgery went well, and he is in a crucial next stage of healing and waiting for the kidney to wake up.

Eric is blessed with this gift and we are in the beginning. Please keep sending healing energy and prayers for this crucial next stage.

As an Arizona Mayo Clinic transplant social worker, Joan Welty had seen firsthand how life-changing living kidney donation can be. In March 2024, she decided to step forward herself — donating one of her kidneys through a non-directed donation.

Her gift not only helped a woman across the country leave dialysis behind, but also gave Joan a profound sense of joy and purpose. "It might seem like a big ask, but it really isn't," she says. Recently, we celebrated a truly remarkable milestone: our 5,000th kidney transplant since we started transplanting kidneys in the 1980s!

Dr. Trevor Nydam, Chief of Transplant Surgery, put it best: "This is an amazing accomplishment for our team! The amount of morbidity and mortality benefit we created is profound. The amount of lives saved is really something for us all to be proud of!"

"I have a donor’s kidney, and without this miracle, my son would have never known a mother off dialysis. I was on that machine for 13 long, painful years.

I feel I am still here to help others get through the same thing. I want to be an advocate for everyone on dialysis or needing a kidney.

Thank you to all donors. Even if you think something can’t be used, it can. I am a donor too. Every transplant is a miracle from above."
