Custer Road United Methodist Church in Plano is hiring a Missions Program Coordinator for The Wheelhouse, our community impact hub where partner ministries, volunteers, and neighbors come together.

📍 Part Time | up to 25 hours per week
💼 Compensation based on experience

This isn’t a desk job. It’s relationship work.

You’ll help build the systems and people power that keep The Wheelhouse running with excellence and warmth:

✅ Lead our 4-week Summer Lunch Program, from recruiting and training volunteers to running daily operations on site
✅ Build and grow a strong base of Wheelhouse hosts and volunteers, and keep them engaged
✅ Welcome neighbors in our lobby and help connect them to real resources
✅ Stay connected with families year round through seasonal gatherings and neighborhood outreach
✅ Coordinate across partner ministries sharing our space
✅ Listen to families and volunteers, track what’s working, and help shape what comes next

You might be a great fit if you:

Have experience in community organizing, nonprofits, social work, or ministry with at-risk communities
Know how to recruit, train, and mobilize volunteers
Love working with children and families
Bring grace, patience, and a positive spirit
Speak Spanish (strongly preferred!)

Also required: 21+, reliable vehicle, valid Texas driver’s license, cell phone with texting, computer literacy, and the ability to lift 50 lbs. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Plano's median household income is over $112,000. It's one of the most affluent cities in Texas. And still, right here in our own zip codes, thousands of families are one bad month away from not having enough to eat or a stable place to live.

Here's what the numbers tell us:

27.5% of Plano ISD students, more than 1 in 4, qualify for free or reduced-price school meals.

53,040 children in Collin County experienced food insecurity in 2024, up from 43,770 the year before (Feeding America, Map the Meal Gap 2026).

On a single night in January 2025, roughly 600 people were counted experiencing homelessness in Collin County as part of the regional Point-in-Time Count.

The median rent in Plano now runs $1,841 a month, pricing more working families out every year.

Need doesn't always look like what we expect. It's hiding behind good school ratings and nice neighborhoods, in families working full-time jobs who still can't close the gap.

This is what our Basic Needs focus is about, one of the four focuses of this year's Community Synergy Impact Campaign.

Here's how CRUMC is responding:

Our own People Who Love People ministry provides food twice a week for food-insecure neighbors and day laborers in East Plano.

Our own summer lunch program includes working with families from our local school partners to find their greatest needs over the summer.

Our own Plain-O Helpers ministry does no-cost home repairs for socially isolated seniors.

We partner with God's Pantry to provide food for the food insecure.

We partner with Bed Start, providing space at the Wheelhouse, funding, and volunteers to help children and families in crisis get a bed.

We partner with Agape Resource and Assistance Center to give women in crisis housing and wraparound social services.

We partner with City Missions to provide homeless care at the Wheelhouse and beyond.

One campaign. Four focuses. Your gift meets real, immediate needs right here in our community.

Sponsored by Women on a Mission, in collaboration with the Legends Ministry.

Join us for an evening with three remarkable pastors as they share their stories of hearing and answering God's call. The program will be moderated by Reverend Sharon O'Connor and Nance Lindstrom.

Called to Lead is a presentation for all ages, and everyone is welcome.

Rev. Jenna Johnson serves as Senior Pastor at Wylie UMC, where she leads with wisdom, compassion, and a deep love for Christ and His people. She is passionate about helping others discover their God-given gifts and calling, and encourages us to step boldly into lives of faith, purpose, and leadership. We are delighted to welcome her back to her home church.

Rev. Donna Whitehead is a gifted pastor and spiritual leader who served as Associate Minister at Custer Road and at Lovers Lane UMC over her 40-plus years in ministry. She has blessed our church community with grace, compassion, and a deep commitment to Christ while encouraging others to grow in faith, discover their God-given gifts, and live courageously into God's calling. We are excited for her to share her wisdom and spirit-filled message with us.

Rev. Leslie Smith is the Pastor of Care and Missions at Creekwood UMC in Allen and a former Associate Minister at Custer Road UMC. She continues to lead with love and a big heart for serving others. Passionate about caring for people, Leslie inspires others to see how God can use their gifts to make a difference in the world around them.

Every winter, when temperatures drop, our neighbors experiencing homelessness need a warm, safe place to sleep. The Plano Overnight Warming Station (POWS) provides exactly that, offering shelter on the coldest nights from November through February, and it runs on volunteers.

Whether you have one night to give or want to serve regularly all season, there's a place for you. Volunteers help welcome guests, serve meals, and provide a safe, dignified space overnight.

This is a simple, meaningful way to make a real difference for people in our community this winter.

Aldersgate Tables | Wednesday, September 30 | 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Room B18

Some of our neighbors go days without a knock on the door or a voice on the other end of the line. Isolation among older adults is one of the quietest needs in Plano, and it is one we are positioned to meet.

This month at Aldersgate Tables we welcome Joy Hinkelman, Executive Director of the Wellness Center for Older Adults. Joy will walk us through what aging looks like in Plano and Collin County right now, what isolation does to a person, and how the Wellness Center is already at work. Then she will name the concrete ways you can be part of it.

This Sunday we celebrate Special Needs Sunday, honoring the families in our community who love and care for children with medical and special needs.

Since 1992, Friday NITE Friends has offered respite care for families of children with medical and special needs, welcoming children and their siblings on Friday evenings right here at Custer Road. Skilled staff, nurses, and volunteers give these kids a safe, joyful place to play while their parents get a few hours to breathe.

Join us this Sunday as we honor these families and the volunteers who serve them.

A big thank you to Kay Henderson, Bobbie Trowbridge, and everyone who sews and donates Little Dresses! Your dedication and generosity make it possible for Send Hope to bring cute, comfortable dresses to girls in La Mosquitia, Honduras.

This summer, mothers gathered to select dresses for their daughters, children proudly showed off their new dresses, and girls at the House of Hope shared smiles together. The dresses are distributed at the House of Hope and carried out to surrounding villages alongside the nutrition program, reaching girls who need them most.

Thanks to the hard work of Kay, Bobbie, and all who make dresses possible, 120 Little Dresses were sent in June and another 120 in August, delivered to Honduras through Send Hope.

The only difference in years past is that you or your Sunday School Class would need to collect and take these to Meals on Wheels Collin County instead of bringing them to the church. This is a drop off only at their corporate offices.
