Gather round for another spooky tale from North Texas Wildlife Center. Sit with your back against the wall, so you know no one is behind you. Waiting. Watching.

NIGHT OF A THOUSAND BUGS

‘Twas a cold and moonless night when I, feeling weary and awoken by the sound of hail hitting the ground, decided to creep from my den to investigate.

As I arrived at ground level, the earth moved beneath me, moving me along as well. Clitter, clatter, like a knight’s armor during battle.

I peered down, holding my breath, fearful of what I was about to discover.

Thousands of bugs- beetles, earwigs, roaches, marching with determination. I scratched beneath me but more beetles poured out like a cursed plague.

I trembled in my shell, withdrew myself and closed my eyes.

By dawn, the bugs were gone.

But something was scratching beneath my armor and intense pain from all over.

The bugs were eating me. I cried out in pain, asking WHYYYY when I heard a voice, loud and clear: us bugs, we get hungry too, muahahahaha! 😈

Thank you to everyone who voted for us! We placed Best of Texas Regional, doing great things for City of Plano, Texas Government and beyond! Although we're called North Texas Wildlife Center, we take in wildlife that are sick, injured, or orphaned from all across the state.

Tails from the Road 🚑: Highland Village & Ft. Worth

RATT handled two very different transport requests yesterday involving vultures. Finders in Highland Village were very concerned about a young vulture that had been in their yard for two days. When Suzanne arrived, the vulture looked healthy and alert and she also noticed both mom and dad were perched on the roof, watching her every move. The finders said they did see mom and dad visiting frequently and always nearby. Plus, the baby made a few practice flights to the roof and back. It was determined this little vulture family decided this yard was a safe place for baby to "spread his wings". The finders agreed to keep an eye on him and call us if anything changes. We are so thankful they were happy to let this little family continue to conduct flying lessons in their yard!

Across town in FTW, Valerie (on her very first transport call with NTXWC!) secured an adult vulture that was grounded and lethargic. We are so grateful the finders called us and Valerie was able to go because once at NTXWC, we discovered he was suffering from secondary rodenticide poisoning. This why we ask (and beg) people and businesses to stop using rodenticide.
