Severe Weather Possible on Saturday!!!

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has highlighted the entire area in a risk for severe weather on Saturday.

Slight Risk Area (Level 2 out of 5): There is a slight risk for severe weather on Saturday for Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia, and western Maryland. In this region, scattered severe thunderstorms will be possible.

Hazard Type: The most likely hazard will be damaging winds, with large hail being a secondary hazard. It is possible that areas from eastern Ohio through central Pennsylvania may experience more widespread wind damage. Tornadoes are even less likely, but cannot be ruled out from eastern Ohio through western Pennsylvania.

Marginal Risk Area (Level 1 out of 5): There is a marginal risk for severe weather on Saturday across portion of northern Virginia and central/northern West Virginia (south of the slight risk area). In this region, isolated severe thunderstorms will be possible.

Hazard Type: Any severe storms in this area will likely come from damaging wind gusts.

Forecast Update!!!

We hope that you are enjoying the comfortable late spring/early summer weather this week!

The next couple of days will continue to feature sunny days, cool nights, and comfortable dewpoints. Over the next couple of days temperatures will gradually begin to increase each day. As we enter the upcoming weekend, there will be a noticeable increase in the dewpoints, as high pressure moves off the East Coast and SW flow develops across the region. A shortwave will approach the region this weekend, introducing the next chance for rain to the area. Timing for this feature may change over the next few days, but right now it appears that the system will arrive late Saturday and Saturday night.

Drought/Agriculture Discussion:

It may seem impossible to think about drought after the wet pattern that we have been experiencing over the past couple of weeks, but soil moisture is still in a deficit across parts of the Central Appalachian region, and will likely worsen over the next week as a result of the drier weather. While parts of West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, and southern Pennsylvania are experiencing drought conditions, northeast Ohio, northwest Pennsylvania, and western New York currently have an excess in soil moisture.

Dry weather during this time of the year can lead to a rapid onset of drought conditions, even in areas that have received sufficient rainfall during the spring months. It is very important to receive consistent rainfall during the late spring and summer months because the sun is near its solar maximum (highest angle in the sky). This causes more direct heating of the earth's surface, resulting in faster evaporation rates. Another important thing to remember is that most plants rely heavily on surface soil moisture. Even though the soil moisture with depth may be sufficient to avoid official drought conditions, surface moisture can dry out rather quickly, leading to crop damage or premature harvest.

If you are a big fan of sunny days, cool nights, and low dewpoints, you will like the weather across the region this weekend. The next opportunity for rain may not arrive until late next week with the approach and passage of a cold front.

Upcoming Pattern Shift!!!

If you are getting tired of the recent wet weather pattern that has gripped the region in recent days/weeks, there is some good news.

After another soggy day of weather today, an area of high pressure will provide a dry, northerly flow across our area for several days. This stretch of weather will begin on Thursday and continue into this weekend. The pattern will feature sunny days and cool, comfortable nights. Unlike the recent muggy weather, we can expect a transition into a drier airmass with lower dewpoints as well. Each day, high temperatures will generally rise into the 60/70s with lows falling into the 40s/50s for most locations.

The weather during the late week/weekend will be perfect for fishing, hiking, weddings, graduation parties, or anything else you plan on doing outdoors. Enjoy!!!
