A broad coalition of advocates, Magee union nurses, community members and elected leaders are calling for paid leave to address the infant and maternal health crisis, and ensure kids and parents can thrive. Clinical studies prove that paid leave reduces infant and maternal deaths and improves physical and mental health for new parents and children. Studies also show that parental leave helps recruit and retain workers, and build a strong economy. Working families are struggling with the rising cost of living, and shouldn’t have to worry about losing their paychecks or jobs in order to take care of their babies. For the health and economic security of everyone in Allegheny County, we need paid parental leave NOW!

The Pennsylvania House just passed The Family Care Act (HB 200) which would allow eligible employees in Pennsylvania access to 12 weeks of paid leave following the birth of a child or serious illness.

Millions of Pennsylvanians, including tens of thousands of healthcare workers — a profession of almost 90% women — still lack real access to paid or protected family leave.

Legislating paid leave not only supports this important workforce's ability to show up and serve their community every day, but we believe it will have a real impact on the health and well-being of families across the Commonwealth.

We applaud the house for their efforts and urge the senate to follow their lead and work together across parties to make paid parental leave a reality for every family in PA.

Magee Nurses and Advanced Practitioners want to hear from you: http://ElevatingPghHealth.org

To our fellow nurses, advanced practitioners, and Pittsburgh community:

We are committed to working directly with UPMC through union negotiations to lead the way for women’s and family health in this region, and to reimagine the nursing profession.

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital anchors the largest women's health network in Pennsylvania, and serves women and families at every stage of life. While we are proud of the innovative, life-saving care we provide to hundreds of thousands of patients at Magee every year, we recognize there is still more that can be done to elevate women’s and family care for our region.

Too often nurses and providers, regardless of what hospital or specialty, are rushed through care, unable to give our patients the time they deserve because we are juggling overwhelming patient assignments. We know that implementing evidence-based practices like nationally accredited staffing standards would better allow us to provide specialized care that improves patient outcomes and experiences.

At the same time nurses — as well as thousands of other working women and families in this region — still lack the kind of professional benefits, time, and support they need to live healthy lives like paid parental leave and affordable health insurance and copays.

As the largest employer and provider of women’s and family healthcare in Pennsylvania, there is a real opportunity for UPMC to partner with us and lead the way on these issues for our region, and it’s important that your input is included in this process.

If you are a nurse, provider, patient, or community member, please take a few minutes RIGHT NOW to answer a short questionnaire about your experiences and share your feedback with us.
