This strange looking outfit is a real bear hunting suit from 19th century Siberia. It was made from thick quilted leather and covered with hundreds of iron nails, each about an inch long, all pointing outward.

The idea was simple and terrifying. If a bear attacked, the nails would keep its jaws and claws from getting a clean grip, giving the hunter just enough time to survive.

Most suits like this were destroyed in attacks or abandoned when hunters did not make it back. But this one is believed to be the only known example that actually worked. The person wearing it was attacked by a bear and lived to tell the story.

Looking at it now, it feels less like armor and more like a last desperate gamble.

Because when the plan requires getting close enough for a bear to grab you, it is already a very bad day.
