Ed Doyle was a friend to the March Mad Dash for the past decade. He will be sorely missed. Thanks to Up N Running for so many years of support. Heartfelt condolences to Ed's family and many friends.
Yesterday the Up-N-Running family and local running community suffered a great loss in the passing of Ed Doyle. Many knew Ed as the ridiculously friendly, mustachioed, self-proclaimed “shoe whisperer” that founded Up-N-Running in 2004 and worked tirelessly to build it into the go-to place to get fitted for shoes and gear and receive the best running advice. His smile was infectious and his generosity was immeasurable. He donated much of his personal time and resources to local races, events, and school programs, and he enjoyed every bit of it.
In addition to being a proud entrepreneur, Ed was a proud father and would talk at length to anyone that would listen about his four kids’ accomplishments, athletic or otherwise. He was also beaming with pride for the success of the running community that he helped to build up. He had a sincere and genuine interest in helping every person that walked in the door achieve their goals. He reveled in the successes of local high school or college runners competing at the very highest level, and he carried that same level of passion and enthusiasm offering advice to someone trying to finish their first marathon or overcome an injury.
Ed retired in 2018, but he remained a constant presence at Up-N-Running events. He looked forward to the weekly shoes n’ brews group runs. Runners love beer and Ed embraced the social aspect of our sport. Up-N-Running is his legacy, and we (Julie, Kevin, & Adriana) intend to be good stewards of what he built. Although Ed is one of a kind and impossible to replace in this world, we will carry forward his original mission of creating an inclusive running and walking environment while also giving back to the community.
Ed was 67, a runner, and in good health. Covid took him away too early. He took every precaution, but still contracted this horrible virus. Please use his passing as a reminder that we must remain diligent for the next several months and adhere to all the recommended safety protocols.
As we all mourn his death, please think of Ed the next time you lace up your shoes for a run. And be sure to pass on his positivity with a smile or a nice gesture to someone nearby. Once the pandemic is in the rearview mirror, we will be hosting a celebration in his honor, so keep an eye out for that in the future.
