Pip Update!

Pip’s procedure on Friday gave us some clarity, but unfortunately still not a definitive answer.

During Pip’s airway examination, Dr. Peterson found uniform swelling throughout his larynx, severe enough to narrow his airway and affect its normal function. The good news is that they found no structural abnormalities in his nasal passages, choana, or visible turbinates, helping rule out some of the concerns we had going into the procedure.

Unfortunately, the tissue in Pip’s larynx was so swollen and fragile that it wasn’t safe to intubate him or obtain biopsies, cultures, or histopathology samples. While it’s frustrating not to have a definitive diagnosis, his doctor feels that, based on Pip’s age and what they observed, this is more likely an inflammatory or immune-mediated condition than cancer.

For now, the plan is to restart prednisolone, this time with a much longer treatment course, and monitor his response closely.

We’re relieved to have ruled out some of the scarier possibilities, but Pip isn’t out of the woods yet. His breathing remains significantly affected, and we still have a long road ahead to determine exactly what is causing the inflammation and how best to manage it long term.

Thank you to everyone who donated, shared, commented, and kept Pip in your thoughts today. Because of you, we were able to get him the specialized care he needed without having to worry about how we’d pay for it.

Thanks to your incredible support, we raised $1,563 for Pip’s procedure. His final bill came to $1,126.72, meaning we completely covered today’s costs and were even able to recoup some of the expenses from his initial urgent care visit and CT scan. Thank you, truly!

Please keep our sweet boy in your thoughts as we start the next chapter of his journey!

Who doesn’t love a drunk cigarette and a beer?

Straight outta our Marlboro colony, meet the Light Beers: IC Light, Miller Light, Natty Light, and Bud Light! These kittens are sweet, playful, chaotic in the best way, and guaranteed to make better life choices than the names they’re carrying.

And don’t forget their beautiful momma, Gina, who somehow managed to raise four tiny jagoffs despite the circumstances.

Gina, Bud Light, and IC Light are currently hanging out at Waterfront Petco, while Miller Light and Natty Light are still living the foster home life. A few of these kids already have applications rolling in, so if you’ve got your eye on one, now’s the time to get that application submitted!

Miss out on the Light Beers? Don’t worry, we’ve got plenty of wonderful adolescent and adult cats waiting for homes, plus more kittens making their debut in the coming weeks. Get approved now and you’ll be ready when your perfect kitty taps in from the bullpen.

Yinz know what to do.

Today is the day!🧡🤍

We’ve just dropped off Pip Safe Haven Vet for the next step in getting answers about his chronic breathing issues.

Around noon, he’ll undergo an endoscopy/rhinoscopy so the internal medicine team can take a closer look at what’s causing the severe swelling around his larynx. Depending on what they find, Pip may also need biopsies, histopathology, and cultures to help determine the underlying cause.

There is one possibility we’re especially hoping for, a congenital defect in the nasal cavity that can sometimes be corrected with a balloon dilation procedure, potentially avoiding more invasive testing. We’re keeping our fingers crossed. 🤞

We’re currently 65% of the way to our fundraising goal and need your help to get the rest of the way there.

Can you spare $5 today to help Pip breathe easier?

Every donation helps cover today’s procedure and brings us one step closer to giving this sweet boy the healthy future he deserves. If you can’t donate, sharing his story means the world to us.

Yesterday, we said goodbye to foster kitten Sriracha.

On June 1st, her foster noticed she wasn’t acting like herself. She had been vomiting and seemed unwell, so we rushed her to BluePearl. After extensive testing the next day at Rivers, we got the diagnosis… FIP.

We immediately started treatment. We had injectable GS on hand, connected with FIP Warriors, and quickly learned she was battling both neurological and wet FIP. Her treatment plan expanded to twice-daily injections, steroids, appetite stimulants, anti-nausea medications, and fluids.

Despite our best efforts, Sriracha continued to decline. On Monday she was sent home with new meds and medicated fluids. But that evening she suffered what appeared to be a neurological episode, possibly a seizure, and worsened throughout the night.

By yesterday morning, it was clear that FIP was winning, and we made the heartbreaking decision to let her go peacefully.

FIP is no longer the death sentence it once was, and we caught it early. We truly believed she had a chance. Sometimes, it just isn’t enough.

What feels especially cruel is that Sriracha and her brother were rescued just one day before this year’s major snowstorm that certainly would have killed them. She survived that, only to lose her battle with FIP months later.

The only comfort we can find is knowing that she spent the last months of her life warm, safe, loved, and cared for. Cats don’t know how long they’re supposed to live. They only know the life they’re given and Sriracha’s life, however short, was a good one.

F**k FIP.

Between emergency care, diagnostics, medications, follow-up visits, and euthanasia, we spent $1,579.01 fighting for her. We would spend it all again and twice over if it meant saving her.

With Pip’s procedure tomorrow and this unexpected expense hitting us hard, donations are deeply appreciated as we work to recover these costs and continue saying “yes” to cats who need us.

Rest easy, sweet girl.

UPDATE: FOSTER PLACEMENT SECURED

🚨 URGENT BOTTLE FEEDER NEEDED IN PGH🚨

We’re looking for an experienced bottle feeder for a single approximately 3-week-old kitten.

About 3.5 weeks ago, we began working a new colony in Wilkinsburg. Since then, we’ve trapped multiple cats, including a pregnant female who was spayed and returned, a friendly mom whose litter had recently passed away, and three weaning-age kittens that took an incredibly stressful rescue effort to finally get.

We also trapped two lactating mother cats. Based on what we observed, we believe one mom had one and the other a pair from the group of kittens we rescued. One mom was feral and returned to the colony, while the other was friendly and remained in foster care.

Then Monday night, residents grabbed a tiny kitten from the backyard.

They believe they know who the kitten’s mother is, but because there may be additional kittens hidden somewhere, we can’t trap her but we also can’t risk putting this little one back outside.

Our hope was that the friendly mother cat currently in foster might accept the kitten. Normally, we would never place an unrelated kitten with another nursing mother. However, these cats all come from the same colony and are likely very closely related, making it the baby’s best chance at being raised naturally by a mom cat. Unfortunately she has zero interest.

That means we need an experienced bottle feeder ASAP.

If you can help, please fill out an application and send us a message. If you can’t foster, please share, this tiny baby is depending on us to find them a safe place to land!

🌈 Hi gay! Happy Pride once again from the gayest cat rescue in Pittsburgh! 🌈

If you’ve ever adopted a cat from us, there’s a pretty good chance that cat was trapped, rescued, fostered, transported, socialized, or medicated by a q***r person.

Last Pride, we changed our profile picture to include the Progress Pride flag. We never changed it back, because without q***r people, there is no Oakland TNR Coalition.

This month, and every month, we’re proud to stand with our LGBTQ+ community, especially our trans community.

$5 Friday for Pip!

No trapping roundup this week (although we did catch 2 new cats ), because right now all eyes are on Pip.

In just one week, Pip heads to Safe Haven Vet for a rhinoscopy and biopsy to finally get answers about the breathing issues that have plagued him since intake and likely his whole life.

Back in April, Pip’s CT scan gave us some good news that there was no mass, foreign object, or polyp. But it also confirmed significant swelling around his larynx, the source of the noisy, labored breathing we’ve been hearing.

The problem is we still don’t know *why*

Steroids didn’t help, which means this may be more sinister than a simple inflammatory condition. The next step is for an internist to look directly at his airway and collect tissue samples for testing so we can finally determine what’s causing the swelling.

Pip’s procedure is scheduled for June 12, 2026 with the internist at Safe Haven Vet in Wexford. This Consult will cost $195 and we’ve been giving a Procedure estimate of $1,800–$2,300

Our fundraising goal is $2,300.

Pip is still so young. He’s incredibly sweet, affectionate, and trusting, the kind of cat who just wants to be loved and befriends every human and cat he meets. He deserves a future where every breath isn’t a struggle.

If you’ve got $5 to spare today, we’d be so grateful. If you can’t donate, sharing this post helps more than you know.

Every dollar brings us closer to answers. Every share helps Pip find the future he deserves!

HAAALLLP! We’re out of food again. 😭

It feels like we’re always asking, but with more than 100 hungry mouths to feed, we’re blowing through food faster than we can restock it.

Right now, our adult wet food shelves are completely EMPTY, and our kitten wet food supply isn’t far behind. We only have a few small bags of adult and kitten dry food left, and those won’t last long either.

We really need yinz to come through for us so we can keep our limited funds focused on medical care, spay/neuter surgeries, and vet bills not emergency food purchases.

Every donation helps. Whether it’s a small bag of kibble, a few cans of wet food, or a larger contribution, it all adds up and keeps our cats fed while they wait for forever homes.

Our wishlists are linked below. Donations can also be dropped off or purchased at the Petco in the Waterfront (Homestead) as part of their “Fill the Bin” donation drive benefiting us!
