Hurrah, indeed! 🙌🏻

in 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, granting women the right to vote. Today marks the 106th anniversary of this monumental moment in American history.

DAR member Febb Ensminger Burn played a pivotal role in its passage. Her son, Congressman Harry T. Burn, was prepared to vote against the amendment, and the outcome hinged on his decision. Just before the vote, he received a letter from his mother urging him to change course: "Hurrah, and vote for suffrage!" she wrote, encouraging him to "be a good boy" and vote in favor at the last minute.

The next day, Congressman Burn cited his mother's advice in a speech explaining his decision to vote in favor, securing ratification and forever changing the course of American history.

Oceanus Hopkins DAR and Little Balkans SAR had a great time handing out American flags at the 80th Annual Arma VJ Parade! It was a hot one, but seeing so many smiling faces made it worth every minute. 🇺🇸

History is always more fun when you experience it together! Last weekend, several members of the Oceanus Hopkins Chapter, NSDAR packed up for a road trip to the beautiful Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas to explore the special America 250 exhibit.
We spent the day discovering stories from our nation’s past and enjoying the company of wonderful friends. We were also happy to have a few HODARs and a junior SAR member join us for the adventure, making the day even more special!
Here’s to celebrating America’s story…one road trip, one exhibit, and one memory at a time. 🇺🇸

🇺🇸 There is just something special about celebrating the Fourth of July in a small town. Today, the Oceanus Hopkins Chapter, NSDAR was proud to join the Little Balkans Chapter, KSSSR in the Pittsburg Fourth of July Parade, surrounded by neighbors, friends, waving flags, and generations of patriotic spirit.
Happy Independence Day from all of us at Oceanus Hopkins and Little Balkans! Here’s to celebrating 250 years of America’s story…one small town parade at a time. 🇺🇸

The journey to Continental Congress is officially underway! 🇺🇸 A few Oceanus Hopkins Chapter members made a fun stop along the way to visit DAR Santa Fe Trail Marker #1. There’s something special about standing where history happened while traveling to celebrate the work of today’s DAR members. Next stop: Washington, D.C.! ✈️

Happy mail has arrived!
One thing you’ll quickly learn about DAR women is that we love our pins. To someone outside the organization, they may look like simple pieces of jewelry. To us, each one tells a story.
Every pin represents a chapter served, a committee chaired, a project completed, a goal reached, or a milestone celebrated. Together, they become a visual record of our DAR journey…our DAR resume.
Congratulations to our Oceanus Hopkins Chapter member, Linda, on receiving her First Generation pin today! We are proud to celebrate the women who are preserving history, promoting education, and honoring patriotism while building their own DAR legacy.

Despite the rain, it was a wonderful morning of service and remembrance. Members of the Molly Foster Berry Chapter, Cofachique Chapter and Oceanus Hopkins Chapter joined together with members of the Fort Scott and Pittsburg SAR chapters to place flags at the Fort Scott National Historic Site for the Symbols of Sacrifice display. Members may have gotten a little wet, but honoring those who sacrificed for our nation made every minute worthwhile. 🇺🇸

invites the community to help place the annual “Symbols of Sacrifice” Field of Honor on Friday, May 22 beginning at 8 a.m. Individuals, families, and groups are welcome to take part in this moving tradition.

Throughout Memorial Day weekend, May 22–25, the Field of Honor will feature 8,500 U.S. flags honoring members of the U.S. Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our nation. The display is open daily from ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset.

Volunteers are also invited to help respectfully retire the display on Tuesday, May 26.
Events take place rain or shine.

What a beautiful evening of history, music, and remembrance at Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons, Kansas 🇺🇸
Last night, Dave Mattox presented a wonderful program highlighting the GAR Circles and sharing the rich Civil War history connected to Oakwood Cemetery, where nearly 370 Civil War veterans from 22 different states are buried. Throughout the evening, Grits & Grass filled the cemetery with wonderful old tunes that made the night even more special. 🎻
The Oceanus Hopkins Chapter, NSDAR was honored to present Dave with the DAR Historic Preservation Recognition Award in recognition of his outstanding dedication to preserving and promoting local history through research, restoration efforts, publications, guided tours, fundraising, and community education. His passion for preserving the stories of Parsons and Labette County continues to make a lasting impact on our community.
