🏴‍☠️ Day 7: The Power of the Fleet (Calculating Watts)A pirate ship is only as fast as the wind in its sails. In our electrical circuit, that total "pushing power" is called Power, and it is measured in Watts. Today we master Sub-element T5C.

Once you know your Voltage (E) and Current (I), finding your Power (P) is a simple matter of multiplication.

🛠️ The Captain’s Tool Kit: The Power Formula
To calculate how much "bounty" your equipment is drawing, use the P-I-E formula: P = I x E
P (Power): Measured in Watts.
I (Current): Measured in Amperes.
E (Voltage): Measured in Volts.

⚓ Two Ways to Sail

The Master Gunner: Knows exactly how much power their station is pulling so they don't blow a fuse in the middle of a transmission.
The Overloaded Hull: Plugs too many devices into a single source, exceeding the wattage and causing a "blackout" on deck.

Study Question: How many Watts are delivered when a 12-Volt battery supplies 2 Amps to a radio?
A) 6 Watts
B) 10 Watts
C) 24 Watts

🏴‍☠️ Day 6: The Resistance (Understanding Ohm’s Law)
To keep your ship’s electronics from walking the plank, you must master the trio of electrical power: Voltage, Current, and Resistance. This is the heart of Sub-element T5.

In our pirate fleet, we use the Ohm’s Law Circle to navigate these calculations.

🛠️ The Captain’s Tool Kit: The Big Three
Voltage (E): The pressure pushing the water (measured in Volts).
Current (I): The actual flow of the water (measured in Amperes).
Resistance (R): The narrowness of the pipe resisting the flow (measured in Ohms).

The Magic Formula: E = I x R

⚓ Two Ways to Sail

The Electrician: Knows that if you double the voltage in a fixed circuit, the current doubles too.
The Short Circuit: Ignores resistance and ends up with a "fried" radio.

Study Question: What is the formula for calculating Voltage?
A) I / R
B) R / I
C) I x R

🏴‍☠️ Day 5: Navigating the Waves (Frequency & Wavelength)

To master the digital seas, a pirate must understand the very water they sail on. In radio, that "water" is the Electromagnetic Spectrum. Today, we tackle the relationship between Frequency and Wavelength.

In the Amateur Radio Guild, we often identify our "sailing grounds" by their wavelength (e.g., the 2-meter band or the 70-centimeter band).

🛠️ The Captain’s Tool Kit: The Golden Rule

The most important thing to remember for your exam is the Inverse Relationship: Higher Frequency = Shorter Wavelength (Fast, choppy waves) Lower Frequency = Longer Wavelength (Long, rolling swells) As the frequency (f) goes up, the physical length of the wave (Λ) goes down. This is why a 2-meter antenna is much larger than a 70-centimeter antenna!

⚓ Two Ways to Sail

The Navigator: Uses the formula ($300 / f{MHz}) to calculate wavelength. They know that a wave at 146 MHz is roughly 2 meters long.
The Drifter: Gets confused by the numbers. Just remember: Big Number (Frequency) = Small Wave.

🏴‍☠️ Pirate Logic: The frequency is how fast you're rowing; the wavelength is how much distance you cover with each stroke.

Study Question:
If you increase your transmit frequency, what happens to the wavelength?
A) It gets longer
B) It stays the same
C) It gets shorter

🏴‍☠️ Day 4: The Captain’s Log (Rules & Operating Procedures)
Every vessel in the Amateur Radio Guild needs a disciplined crew. Today, we dive into Sub-element T1: the FCC Rules and Operating Procedures. This is the "Code of the Sea" that keeps the airwaves from turning into total chaos.

To sail these waters legally, you must understand the basics of identifying your station and the restrictions on what you can transmit.

🛠️ The Captain’s Tool Kit: Essential Rules
Station ID: You must identify your station every 10 minutes during a conversation and at the end of your last transmission.

No Broad-Casting: Amateur radio is for two-way communication. You aren't a DJ; you can't play music or broadcast "one-way" entertainment.

The "Callsign" Bounty: Once you pass, the FCC assigns you a unique callsign. This is your official name on the air.

⚓ Two Ways to Sail
The Disciplined Corsair: Operates with courtesy, gives way to emergency traffic, and keeps their transmissions "ship-shape."

The Scallywag: Ignores the ID rules and causes interference. The FCC "Privateers" (Enforcement Bureau) have a long reach—don't let them sink your license!

Study Question: How often must you identify your station?
A) Every 5 mins B) Every 10 mins C) Only at the end.

Drop your guess below! 👇

🏴‍☠️ Day 3: Scouting the Horizon (Question Pool Secrets)
Before a pirate sets a course, they must study the charts. To earn your Technician license, you need to know exactly what’s on the map. The "map" in this case is the Technician Class Question Pool.

The FCC doesn't keep the exam a secret. There is a public pool of 411 questions covering everything from radio waves to safety rules. On exam day, 35 of these will be pulled for your test. You only need 26 correct (about 74%) to claim your bounty and get licensed!

🛠️ The Captain’s Tool Kit: Charting the Pool
Add these essential tools to your kit to master the material:

HamStudy.org: The best digital deck for flashcards and practice tests. It tracks which questions "tangle your lines" and helps you focus there.

The ARRL Study Manual: The gold standard for deep-diving into the "why" behind the answers.

The Rule of 35: Remember, you aren't fighting all 411 questions at once. You are just preparing for the 35 that appear on deck.

⚓ Two Ways to Sail
The Navigator’s Path: Focus on the sub-elements. The pool is broken into sections (like Rules, Operating Procedures, and Electrical Principles). Mastering one section at a time makes the 411 questions feel like a light breeze.

The Drifting Hull: Trying to memorize all 411 answers in one night without understanding the "why" is a quick way to hit a reef. Take it section by section!

🏴‍☠️ Pirate Logic: You don't need to be an engineer to start. You just need to be a scout. Learn the patterns, use the tools, and the license is yours.

Which study tool are you using to track your progress? Let us know in the comments!

🏴‍☠️ Day 2: Claiming Your Letters of Marque

Every pirate needs their papers before they can officially sail the digital seas. In the world of Amateur Radio, your "Letters of Marque" is your FRN (FCC Registration Number).

Before you can sit for your Technician Exam, you must be registered in the FCC’s CORES system. This unique 10-digit number is yours for life—it tracks your licenses and is how the FCC knows who is manning the station.

🛠️ The Captain’s Tool Kit: Task 1
To join the fleet, follow these steps to secure your credentials:

*Navigate to the FCC CORES Website: Register here: https://apps.fcc.gov/cores/userLogin.do
* Create a Username: Use a reliable email address.
* Request your FRN: Provide your details to generate your unique number.
* Stow it Safely: You’ll need this number for your exam application and every time you upgrade your rank.

Note: There is no cost to register for an FRN, but you must have one before you head to the testing deck!

⚓ Two Ways to Sail
The Quartermaster’s Path: Registering now ensures your paperwork is "ship-shape" before exam day, preventing delays in getting your callsign.

The Ghost Ship: Waiting until the last minute can lead to technical snags. Don't let a login error keep you from your license!

Drop a "⚓" in the comments once you’ve secured your FRN!
