Every story has a beginning. And the beginning of this story matters more than most people realize, because it is not just the beginning of Israel, a family, or a nation. It is the beginning of man.

Genesis is where God establishes what masculinity is, what it is for, what it costs when it fails, and what it looks like when grace begins to rebuild what sin has broken. Every man who appears in these pages is carrying something forward on behalf of the human race, and every man in these pages falls short of what he was given to carry. That is not an accident. It is the point.

Before we move forward in Scripture, we need to look back at what Genesis has shown us as a whole. Not just individual men, but the pattern running beneath all of them. Because there is a pattern, and if you miss it, you will miss what the rest of the Bible is trying to say about manhood.

Most men can maintain their character when life is comfortable. The real test is what a man does when everything has been taken from him.

When the job disappears, when the relationship falls apart, when the people who should have protected him betray him instead, when he ends up somewhere he never chose and cannot escape, what remains of the man? What is left when the circumstances that used to support him are gone and all that is left is who he actually is?

That is the question Joseph’s life answers. And the answer is one of the most complete pictures of biblical manhood in all of Genesis.

Some men spend their whole lives trying to get ahead, and never stop to ask what they are running from.

Jacob is that kind of man, for most of his life. He is clever. He is resourceful. He knows how to read a situation and tilt it in his favor. By almost every worldly measure, Jacob succeeds. He gets the blessing. He gets the wives. He gets the wealth. He gets the family.

But underneath all of that success is a man who has never stopped scheming, never stopped controlling, and never truly faced who he is. And God, in His mercy, will not let that continue forever.

Jacob’s story is the story of a man who spends decades getting what he wants through his own strength, until one night, alone, he finally meets someone he cannot out-maneuver. And that meeting changes everything.

The Man Who Wrestled Until He Was Changed

Some men inherit more than property. They inherit patterns.

A father’s strengths and a father’s failures both get passed down, often without either man realizing it is happening. The son does not set out to repeat his father’s mistakes. He simply absorbs them, the way a child absorbs a posture, a tone of voice, a way of handling conflict, long before he is old enough to recognize what he has learned.

Isaac is that son.

Some men are remembered for everything they did. A few men are remembered for almost nothing at all, and yet they leave a mark that outlasts men who did far more.

Melchizedek is one of those men.

He appears in Genesis for only a handful of verses. He has no genealogy in the text, no recorded birth, no recorded death. He walks onto the page, blesses Abraham, receives a tithe, and walks back off again. And yet centuries later, the Psalms speak of him. Centuries after that, Hebrews builds an entire argument around him. A man who occupies barely a paragraph in Genesis becomes one of the most theologically significant figures in all of Scripture.

That should make us pay attention.

Some men do not fall all at once. They drift.

The movement is rarely dramatic. There is no single decision that ruins everything. Instead, there is a series of small choices, each one reasonable on its own, each one moving in the same direction until a man looks up and realizes he is somewhere he never intended to be. And the tragedy is not only where he ended up. It is the one who came with him.

Lot is that kind of man. He is not a villain. He is not an outright pagan. The New Testament calls him righteous, a man tormented by the wickedness around him. But the story Genesis tells is the story of a righteous man who allowed proximity to sin to gradually erode his convictions, compromise his leadership, and cost him nearly everything he had.

Lot is a warning. And the church needs to hear him clearly.

I am not a Southern Baptist.

I have never sat in a pew with a messenger badge. I have never voted on a resolution or watched a constitutional amendment move through two readings. The Southern Baptist Convention is not my tribe, my tradition, or my accountability structure. Whatever happens in its meeting rooms does not change my ordination, my church membership, or my Sunday morning.

And yet I spent the last several days unable to look away.

Some men believe God in the big moments but struggle to trust Him in the pressure of ordinary life.

They can take steps of faith. They can leave what is familiar. They can obey when God calls them into something new. But then fear rises. Waiting gets long. Circumstances get complicated. And the same man who once walked by faith begins to grasp for control.

That is Abraham.

He is one of the most important men in all of Scripture. He is the father of the covenant people. He is the man called out of Ur, the man given the promise, the man who believed God and had it counted to him as righteousness.
