Did you know Lily’s lungs are being used to research lung disease and to develop better treatment for it? That’s right my babygirl who was only 22 months old is changing the medicine world! Here is a quote from USF themselves about Lily!
“Our research focuses on sensory nerves that are found in the lungs. These nerves send signals to the brain when they sense environmental pollutants and irritants in the lungs. They play a vital role in the proper functioning of our lungs. However, when these nerves are triggered improperly/overactive, it gives rise to many conditions such as chronic cough, asthma, and other respiratory diseases (e.g. COVID).
In our lab, we mainly mimic these lung diseases in animal models and cells obtained from animals. Thanks to donated human lungs, like Lily’s, we can study how these nerves function in real lungs, not just in animals or artificial models. This gives us critical insight into how lung disease affects people and how we might develop better treatments in the future.
On behalf of our entire team, our sincerest thanks for your selfless contribution towards scientific research. Please know that your decision will make a difference to countless affected patients.”
