A Guide to Clipping Wings

Clipping chicken wings is a good skill to have if you’re going to raise backyard chickens. Unlike humans, who periodically get a haircut, shave, and nail trim, most chickens are pretty well equipped to take care of their own trims. Feathers naturally fall out and are replaced by fresh new ones at least once a year. Toenails get filed down while a chicken engages in its eternal soil scratching. At times, however, a chicken can use a little trimming assistance. Wing feathers, vent feathers, and crest feathers may need to be clipped back. Overly long toenails need to be trimmed, as might also an overgrown beak or a dangerously long spur.

Basic Chicken Coop Supplies for Emergencies

- Unopened saline or bottled water, an eye dropper or syringe
- Sterile gauze, paper towels
- Vet wrap
- Clean sharp scissors, and waterless hand sanitizer
- A plastic basin or dishpan makes a good soaking tub, and can also keep supplies up out of the litter when you’re treating an injury
- Old towels help you restrain or dry a chicken
- Plastic baggies are useful for preserving samples such as unusual droppings
- Blu-kote or other dark-colored anti-pick lotion
- Betadine or hydrogen peroxide (the latter is harsh on delicate tissue, but the foaming action can help cleanse badly contaminated wounds)
- Vetericyn spray
- Baby shampoo
- A general-purpose poultry vitamin and an electrolyte powder round out the kit.

1. You do not have to own chickens to join the 4-H poultry club
2. 4-H clubs are for children 5-18, but children with special needs can participate up to age 25
3. No requirement that children are enrolled in public or private school
4. There are volunteer opportunities for adults. Speaking to classes, judging exhibitions, fundraising, hosting clubs and more
5. Currently looking for assistance in fundraising for the 4-H Embryology Program so that Pinellas County teachers can incubate chicks with their classes. More information on how to help to follow.

Saturday, September 6, 2025. The Florida State Fair Agribusiness is putting on a Poultry 101 seminar.Registration is 8-8:30. Seminar from 8:30-12:30. It will be located at the Ag Hall of Fame building. It is a very intensive 4 hour seminar.

The registration form is for a lot of different events. Just pick the Poultry 101. You can ignore the check boxes for ages.
