Troop 2451 has had a busy month learning all about first aid. Our first meeting both the Daisy's and Brownies earned their first aid pins. Some key points Daisy's learned about was what to do if they ever get lost, how to notice the signs of someone choking and how to get help, stop drop and roll and calling 911.
Our girl Scout troop then went on a tour of the local hospital to complete the 2nd portion our troops first aid badge.
Some of the favorite parts during the tour included:
πWalking onto the helicopter pad to get a feel for an emergency lifeflight landing.
𧲠watching the MRI machine strongly attracting a metallic object towards the machine and watching the mega force of it's power along with learning it's purpose. The girls also learned about an ultrasound machine and it's many purposes, xray machine and xray film, and the process of a EKG.
ππ©Έ touring the lab and seeing the blood cells separate under the microscope along with leaning about all the types of different samples used to check for sickness besides a blood sample.
π§Όπ§«π§¬ prior to our arrival the leaders took swabs of every girls hands in the troop and a few other samples like the door handle and the sink. Those samples were incubated for two weeks allowing for growth of bacteria. And it was absolutely crazy to see the results. This was a perfect teaching opportunity for the girls to learn the importance of watching their hands and exactly what kinds of germs can stay on their hands. (Big rave to everyone who was in the lab smelling their stinking samples for two weeks. π€£)
πππ lastly the girls toured the kitchen facilities, went inside the huge cold box and learned the process of keeping patients fed and the importance of a well balanced meal.
They ended their tour with a delicious yogurt parfait provided from the hospital kitchen!!
ππ©Ήπ§°The 3rd portion of our badge was spent learning about type 1 and type 2 diabetes which was taught in a way making the experience not just informational but fun. They loved playing freeze tag and having to wait to get unfrozen from insulan. Lastly the girls each made their own first aid kits to take home.
We can't think the staff at Shoshone Medical Center enough for the amazing experience!
