SO EXCITING! Don't miss the Wilcox Historical Society Tour of Homes March 27th - 28th!
🪦 Palmer Cemetery Added to the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register! We are proud to share that Palmer Cemetery in Furman has been officially added to the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register, the state’s official listing of historically significant cemeteries that encourages their preservation. Palmer Cemetery is the 12th cemetery in Wilcox County to receive this designation.
Founded in 1831, Palmer Cemetery contains more than 190 years of history and generations of families connected to Furman and Snow Hill. Pictured here is the tombstone of Oscar Comellen Palmer (1821–1831), the earliest known burial in the cemetery and the young son of early settlers Stephen and Juliet Hartwell Palmer.
Palmer Cemetery also includes an African American section with grave markers dating to the late 19th century. Several tombstones and grave slabs bear no inscriptions, and additional unmarked burials are believed to be present, an important reminder of lives lived, families formed, and stories that deserve continued research, recognition, and preservation.
The application was submitted by Martha Grimes Lampkin and included a complete cemetery inventory, a narrative history and statement of significance, and photographic documentation of the tombstones.
Palmer Cemetery and the nearby Palmer home, Magnolia Glen, will both be featured on the Wilcox Historical Society Tour of Homes weekend - March 27-28.
