Eastern KY Spay & Neuter + Emergency Vet Initiative Working to bring affordable spay/neuter services & after-hours emergency veterinary care to East KY

10/16/2026

🐾 A Little Update on Our Initiative! ❤️

We've been a little quiet on here lately, but that doesn't mean things have stopped moving!

I've been working behind the scenes, reaching out to organizations, exploring resources, and beginning the groundwork for what it would take to bring affordable spay/neuter services and emergency veterinary care closer to home here in Eastern Kentucky.

There's still a LOT of research, planning, and collaboration ahead, but we're taking steps forward!

I'm also looking to connect with veterinarians or anyone experienced in the business, management, or development side of veterinary clinics. If you know someone who might be willing to offer guidance or get involved, please reach out!

And please share this post! You never know who might see it and help us make the right connections. ❤️

Thank y'all for continuing to support this initiative. We're still here, and we're still moving forward! 🐾

🐾 So what happens after Phase 1?

Phase 1 has been about listening: gathering survey responses, building community awareness and learning what people in Eastern Kentucky are actually experiencing.

As we move toward Phase 2, the focus begins shifting toward turning that information into something useful—making connections, exploring partnerships and resources, and figuring out what realistic next steps could look like.

Nothing is being promised overnight.

We're building this carefully, one step at a time. ❤️

🦇 Today's Random Appalachian Critter Fact

Bats may look a little spooky flying around at dusk, but they're an important part of our ecosystem.

Many North American bats eat huge numbers of night-flying insects, including agricultural pests.

So that little creature swooping around your yard isn't looking for your hair 😂—it's probably busy hunting dinner.

Another misunderstood critter doing an important job. ❤️

A little appreciation today for the people who quietly help animals without anyone ever knowing about it. ❤️

The person who feeds a stray.

The person who stops for an injured animal.

The foster who says "just one more."

The neighbor who helps find a lost dog.

The person who transports an animal to a rescue.

The people who donate food, blankets, money or time.

A lot of animal welfare happens because ordinary people simply decide they aren't going to look the other way.

Thank you. 🐾

🐾 Pet Safety Tip

Keep a current photo of every pet on your phone—and occasionally take clear pictures showing their entire body and any unique markings.

If they ever go missing, you'll already have good identification photos ready for lost-pet posts, shelters and rescues.

While you're at it, make sure their microchip information and ID tags have your current phone number.

Hopefully you'll never need any of it. ❤️

I need to know something important. 😂

What completely ridiculous thing is your pet afraid of?

Vacuum cleaner? Trash bags? Thunder? A particular household object that has apparently committed an unforgivable offense?

Tell me yours. 🐾👇

🐶 Quick Training Tip

Reward the behavior you want to see—even when you didn't ask for it.

Dog lying quietly instead of jumping? Reward it.

Puppy chooses their toy instead of your shoe? Reward it.

Dog calmly watches something instead of barking? Reward it.

Training isn't only about correcting unwanted behavior. Catching them being GOOD teaches them what works, too. ❤️🐾

🐾 Eastern Kentucky — I need your help again!

We're getting closer to moving this initiative into Phase 2, but the information we're gathering now matters.

If you haven't taken our community survey yet, please take 1–2 minutes to complete it.

Already completed it? Sharing this post or sending the survey to another Eastern Kentucky pet owner helps just as much. ❤️

Please only complete the survey once so our results stay as accurate as possible.

Every response gives us a stronger picture of what our communities actually need.

This data will help our community present the need for these services in the area to those who approve the project.

🦨 Today's Random Appalachian Critter Fact

Skunks get a bad reputation for obvious reasons 😂, but they're actually pretty useful neighbors!

They eat insects, grubs, rodents and other small pests, and they'd generally much rather avoid you than spray you.

That famous spray is primarily a defense mechanism, not an attack strategy.

So if you see one wandering through the yard, give the little stink kitty some space and let it carry on with its night. 😂❤️
