We appreciate Three Rivers Market!
The Nourishing Change recipient for June will be to benefit The One Five Grocery!
In the census tracts that make up the 37915 ZIP Code, the USDA has identified a food desert—an entire community without a single full-service grocery store. For many of our neighbors, especially seniors and those without transportation, getting fresh food is a daily challenge.
But this community is more than a food desert—it is also what researchers call a food swamp: a neighborhood inundated with corner stores, dollar stores, and fast-food restaurants that offer little to no healthy options. Food swamps are communities where unhealthy food choices outnumber healthy ones by as much as four to one.
The consequences are more than inconvenient—they are life-altering. Communities living in food deserts and food swamps often experience higher rates of heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and obesity because residents lack consistent access to fresh, affordable fruits and vegetables. When unhealthy options are plentiful and healthy options are scarce, poor health outcomes become deeply connected to geography and economics.
Created by Battlefield Farm & Gardens, The ONE FIVE is a brick-and-mortar neighborhood market designed to turn scarcity into sustainability. Named after the 37915 ZIP Code it serves—and because every item is sold for just a nickel (ONE FIVE) over cost—The ONE FIVE exists to make healthy food truly affordable.
