We appreciate Three Rivers Market!

The Nourishing Change recipient for June will be to benefit The One Five Grocery!

In the census tracts that make up the 37915 ZIP Code, the USDA has identified a food desert—an entire community without a single full-service grocery store. For many of our neighbors, especially seniors and those without transportation, getting fresh food is a daily challenge.

But this community is more than a food desert—it is also what researchers call a food swamp: a neighborhood inundated with corner stores, dollar stores, and fast-food restaurants that offer little to no healthy options. Food swamps are communities where unhealthy food choices outnumber healthy ones by as much as four to one.

The consequences are more than inconvenient—they are life-altering. Communities living in food deserts and food swamps often experience higher rates of heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and obesity because residents lack consistent access to fresh, affordable fruits and vegetables. When unhealthy options are plentiful and healthy options are scarce, poor health outcomes become deeply connected to geography and economics.

Created by Battlefield Farm & Gardens, The ONE FIVE is a brick-and-mortar neighborhood market designed to turn scarcity into sustainability. Named after the 37915 ZIP Code it serves—and because every item is sold for just a nickel (ONE FIVE) over cost—The ONE FIVE exists to make healthy food truly affordable.

Battlefield Farm and The ONE FIVE Grocery Store is working to bring more than just a new business to Five Points in East Knoxville..we’re building a solution.

In a community that has long faced limited access to fresh, affordable food, this effort represents a step toward addressing a persistent food desert and restoring something essential: choice, health, and dignity.

Our vision is rooted in service by creating a space where residents don’t have to leave their neighborhood to access quality affordable groceries and household items, and where community investment is centered on people.

Stay tuned for more announcements……🪴

🌱✨ TOMORROW! Join us, Knoxville on Friday April 17!! We’re inviting everyone out to the Western Heights/ Mechanicsville/ Beaumont community for a special ribbon-cutting and dedication of something powerful taking root right in the neighborhood.

The Miller Heritage Community Garden is located at 1311 Jourolman Ave. This new garden sits on land that has been in one family for over 100 years, generously donated by Sandra Davis Bullis, and is now being transformed into a space to grow fresh food, build community, and fight food insecurity.

The garden features 30 raised beds, including 29 available for neighborhood residents and one dedicated youth garden in partnership with the Western Heights Baptist Center, with produce helping to support the local food pantry while also creating hands-on learning opportunities for youth and families.

As part of the Knox County Community Garden & Grower’s Alliance, a network working to expand access to healthy food across Knoxville, the garden reflects a broader mission to build sustainable, community-driven solutions.

“We believe access to fresh, healthy food is fundamental to both physical and mental well-being,” said Alliance Chief Executive Director Pastor Chris Battle. “The Miller Heritage Community Garden is more than a place to grow food, it’s a place to grow community, invest in our youth, and create solutions that will benefit generations to come. This garden is another tool we are using to fight food insecurity in our community and we are excited to expand into the Mechanicsville and Western Heights neighborhood.”

✨ It’s Almost Giving Tuesday! ✨

Today, we’re asking our community to stand with BattleField Farm & Gardens as we continue the fight against food disparity in East Knoxville.

For years, BattleField Farm has been growing fresh, affordable, culturally relevant food right here in our neighborhoods — but we’re ready to do even more.

🌱 Your donation today helps us:
• Launch our long-awaited Mobile Grocery Store, bringing healthy options directly to families and seniors
• Open our first brick-and-mortar grocery store in East Knoxville — a dream that will transform access for generations
• Expand our work to ensure EVERY household has the dignity of fresh food, close to home

This Giving Tuesday, invest in food justice. Invest in East Knoxville. Invest in a future where no family goes without.
