In places like Jacobabad, Pakistan, where high temperatures are already near the limits of human survivability, the coming El Niño weather event could test the limits of local heat adaptation. Because climate change has already driven up average global temperatures by at least 1.4°C / 2.5°F since pre-industrial times, the extra El Niño warming is likely to drive new extreme heat records. 🌍 Join HERA at London Climate Action Week 2026!
Extreme heat is one of the fastest-growing climate hazards facing communities worldwide — yet it remains one of the most underfunded and overlooked climate risks.

At London Climate Action Week 2026, HERA will host three sessions bringing together leaders, practitioners, policymakers, researchers, funders, and community advocates to explore practical, scalable solutions that protect health, livelihoods, and dignity in a hotter world.
From women's health and heat resilience to decision-making tools and climate adaptation finance, these conversations highlight innovative approaches and real-world solutions already helping communities adapt to rising temperatures.

Two types of air masses bring the world's deadliest heat: dry tropical air, the hottest and driest conditions on earth, and moist tropical air, the most suffocating, with the warmest nights of any weather system.

Both are changing fast — and what is changing fastest is not the afternoon peak. It is nighttime heat.

Daytime temperatures have barely shifted in 30 years. But inside these deadly air masses, nighttime temperatures are rising at 1°C every 8 years in some cities — ten times faster than the day.

In a generation, that is four degrees of heat the body must endure every single night. No rest. No recovery. No relief.

83% of global cities show dangerously rising nighttime temperatures. Yet our warning systems are still looking the other way. Here is what the science says we are missing: nights are no longer safe — and the science is clear on what we need to do about it. On this Global Heat Action Day, we invite you to read the full report, 'When Nights Turn Deadly.' Link in bio.

Do you have questions about the record-breaking heatwaves happening around the world right now? ’s Heat Science Hotline can help you! ☎️

Meet Joyce Kimutai, a climate scientist with the World Weather Attribution Consortium at Imperial College London’s Centre for Environmental Policy and the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority.

Joyce translates climate science into actionable information— including defining heatwave thresholds, assessing heat-health impacts, and supporting the development of a Heat Action Plan roadmap for Nairobi.

Now, you have the opportunity to ask Joyce your own questions about extreme heat, climate attribution science, and heat resilience through the Heat Science Hotline.

Watch the video below to learn more about Joyce — and stay tuned for more insights from the Heat Science Hotline Board.
