🧼KEEPING YOUR HOME CLEAN WITH A BUNNY

Mess is one of the biggest reasons rabbits are surrendered or returned to us, however…

A few changes to your setup and cleanup routine can make living with a bunny much more manageable!:

1. PROPER ENVIRONMENT
•Cages and hutches can be expensive and get dirty much quicker.
💡Not only that, they separate your bunny from you and your family and don’t give your bunny adequate space for exercise.
•Building up to free roaming your rabbit or keeping them in an Xpen when you are not home or asleep is a much easier and more fun way to harbor your rabbit!
💡All it takes is 20 minutes max set aside each day to quickly clean up any hay, fur, etc. in your home.
‼️ Cages or hutches, especially with no litter box or a very small box, only contain mess, but not always smell, and clean of these types of enclosures can require intensive work, as opposed to a quick sweep or vacuum each day ‼️

2. MAKE HAY CLEANUP EASIER
• An affordable shop vac and/or old-school carpet sweeper can make quick cleanup easier (see “product options at the end of this post).
• Pick up large handfuls of hay before vacuuming. Even strong vacuums can become worn down by hay!
• Alternatively, use a carpet sweeper to collect larger pieces of hay and other debris, then follow with a regular vacuum for fine dust.

3. CONTAIN & MAINTAIN LITTER & HAY MESS
• Litter-box liners can make cleanup easier, provided your bunny doesn’t chew them.
• If your bun likes to dig in their bedding/litter, an appropriate grated litter box, such as a Rooly or BumBox, can help.
• A high-sided litter box or hay feeder can help contain hay that gets tossed around, although some highly committed bunnies will rip hay out of the feeder or high-sided box and toss it around anyways.
💡A large storage tub can be an affordable litter-box alternative, you can even cut a lower entrance if needed for your bunny. A wire basket hung on an x-pen can serve as an affordable hay feeder.
• A cat litter-box enclosure can help hide and contain mess while blending in with furniture in your main living area. You must clean the inside of it regularly to prevent buildup that can contribute to respiratory issues!

4. KEEP A CONSISTENT LITTER-BOX ROUTINE
• Use gloves to scoop out handfuls of soiled hay and litter each day.
• Pine pellets are great options for controlling odor and helping keep your bunny’s feet clean. Tractor Supply has these in abundance for a very affordable price and your local feed may as well.
• With regular scooping, a full litter change around 1–3 times weekly may work well.
💡Find the sweet spot for your bunny! Changing everything too often can remove the familiar scent they associate with where to go. Waiting too long can lead them to go outside the box - no one likes a dirty, overflowing litter box!

5. MANAGE FUR & HAY DUST
• Regular brushing and/or gently plucking loose, shedding fur can help keep it from ending up everywhere.
• An air purifier can help keep fur and hay dust under control.

MEET DARLA 👑🩶

Darla is a stunning one year old Vienna Blue female who has already earned herself the nickname “Athena” from our PetCo volunteers thanks to her beautiful coat and confident personality! She spent her playtime today making herself right at home by chinning just about everything she could find…and then circling back to chin it again, just in case anyone missed the memo that it belongs to HER now! She also made sure to show off her impressive binky skills for all her new admirers!

For all that confidence, Darla has one big weakness…pets 😌 Reach out to give her some love and her eyes will immediately close as she turns into a puddle of bunny. She seems perfectly happy to accept affection from just about anyone and everyone! We’ve only just started getting to know this lovable, spirited girl and she’s already given us plenty to fall in love with.

Darla is spayed, vaccinated, and available for adoption. She is currently residing at PetCo on Power and Baseline in Mesa!

Please be aware that employees at PetCo are not responsible for opening the rabbit’s cages. If you’d like some 1-1 time with any of our bunnies, please reach out to us.

MEET ZARA! 😍🦁

Zara is a gorgeous 3 year old Lionhead female who just joined us at our Petco location today! She’s still getting acquainted with her new surroundings, but she’s already shown us that she’s a big fan of affection. Offer her some head scratches and she’ll happily melt right into them right away, no matter who you are 🩷

She’s also made one thing very clear: there is a correct way to arrange her hay, and only Zara knows what that is. She loves digging through it, pushing it around, and making sure every piece is positioned exactly to her liking (hence the silly photo of her with her little hat made of hay crumbs).

We’re so excited to get to know this sweet girl and watch more of her personality come out as she settles in!

Leila and Aster needed to get their nails trimmed up today and made sure to give us the squinty eyes of disapproval so we could feel their disappointment ☹️

Aster immediately went into their litter box to unwind after such rudeness from his mean human caregivers 😤

This adorable pair have quickly become volunteer favorites and the PetCo employees absolutely love letting them out on their own free will too, sometimes even after a long day at work, just to see their playful personalities in action!

We are soon going to be launching a new TikTok account and become consistently active on Instagram again to give our sweet bunnies like these two even more visibility! 👀

Leila and Aster are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and awaiting adoption! Since they have been so close for so long, we are requiring that they be adopted together. Both of these charming little bunnies are currently residing at PetCo on Power and Baseline in Mesa and would be thrilled to show you how cute they are together if you pop in and say hi!

SANDY GOT ADOPTED! 🎉🥳

We are so happy for our sweet and sassy Sandy for finding an incredible home where she will get to be bonded with her new future husbun, Fig Newton! Since she was bonded to another bunny in the past, this was the ideal situation for her and her new mom already takes amazing care of Fig Newton, so we know she is in good hands.

As you can see in the picture she provided once Sandy was home and settled in, they are already choosing to spend time next to each other in their pens 🥰 They are definitely going to end up being so in love once they’re bonded!

Our PetCo bunnies are getting adopted so fast and we are over the moon that they get to live out the rest of their lives in their ideal environments with humans who love and want the best for them 😌

Soon we will have 2 more bunnies transferred over to this location so stay tuned to see who will be next in search of a new home 👀

SHOPPING REMINDER

Even reputable businesses can introduce new products or change recipes over time. Before purchasing anything edible, always review the complete ingredient list. Introduce new treats gradually, feed them in moderation, and remember that unlimited grass hay should remain the foundation of a rabbit’s diet.

Have you tried any of these shops? Share your bunny’s favorite purchases in the comments and let us know if there are any other trusted rabbit shops we should explore!
