How can I return to my foundational values and build a worldview from there, rather than letting politics dictate my values? As Elul and Tishrei arrive, we might wonder if we’re being hypocritical: asking forgiveness for the same mistakes we may well make again next year.

But the Chozeh MiLublin (a great 18th century Polish Hasidic rebbe) offered a radically different perspective. We aren’t putting on an act during these days. Rather, these days reveal something deeper within us.

The person we strive to be during the High Holidays isn’t a fraud. It may be the truest version of who we are, and who we are capable of becoming.
