Hey world! Do you know anyone looking to volunteer this summer?

We're looking for 2 positions to be filled and you can read more about the requirements below!

Position: Social Media Manager (Volunteer)
Location: Remote

Time Commitment: 2-5 hours per week (3-Month appointment)

Overview: We are seeking 5 creative and enthusiastic Social Media Managers to join our team. The volunteer will be responsible for managing our social media accounts, creating engaging content, and helping to grow our online presence.

Responsibilities:
Create, curate, and manage published content (images, video, written, and audio).
Monitor social media channels for comments, messages, and interactions.
Engage with our audience by responding to comments and messages.

Qualifications:
Experience with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.).
Strong writing and editing skills.
Creative mindset with the ability to generate engaging content.
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
Passion for our cause and mission.
Reliable internet access.

Position: Grant Researcher (Volunteer)
Location: Remote

Time Commitment: 2-5 hours per week (3-Month appointment)

Overview: We are looking for 2 detail-oriented and proactive Grant Researchers to join our team. The volunteer will identify potential grant opportunities, assist in the preparation of grant applications, and help secure funding for our organization’s projects.

Responsibilities:
Research and identify potential grant opportunities from various sources (foundations, government agencies, corporations).
Assist in the preparation and submission of grant applications and proposals.
Maintain a database of grant opportunities, deadlines, and application statuses.
Collaborate with team members to gather necessary information for grant applications.
Monitor and track grant application outcomes and provide updates to the team.

Qualifications:
Strong research and analytical skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
Familiarity with grant application processes is a plus.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Passion for our cause and mission.

🎉 Day 1 of our menstrual hygiene training was a success! 🌸
We did not hit our financial goal but are extremely proud of what we’ve been able to do with what we had and how impactful the training was all around.

We had an incredible turnout with 17 women, 6 men, and 51 girls joining us. Today’s session covered essential theory topics like understanding menstruation, counting menstrual days, busting myths about menstrual hygiene, and exploring different types of pads—including the benefits of reusable ones. 🌿💧

We Need Your Help!

May 28th is Menstrual Hygiene Day and as we approach May we will be reminding you of the importance of menstrual hygiene education as well as solutions to keep our young girls in school!

We've run two great menstrual hygiene initiatives, Menstrual Hygiene Education and Amani project, and we want to follow up on these programs due to their great impacts and the many calls we've received for implementation!

Where Do You Come In?

We're running a different sort of fundraising challenge requiring a series of trades to bring us to our $10,000 goal. This isn't an easy task, but we're here to see it through!

The video details what we're looking to do and our next few videos will run through the challenge so look out!

How Can You Help?

Like and share the content as we roll them out. Participate in the trades if you are able to but most importantly, help us gain visibility by sampling liking, and sharing!

Hurdles upon hurdles upon hurdles!

The past couple of years have taught us a lot about the power of teamwork, through trial and error, miscommunication, lack of funds, etc., having a community (and communities) believe in your cause makes every step worth it. Despite the trials and errors, here are some 2023 takeaways;

1. Communicate with your team:
Being open and having transparent communication is key when working with any team, especially with a team that's scattered across continents. At times we found members lacking one or two key pieces of information which meant a 3am call for someone or an evening WhatsApp call for clarification. Regularly check in with your team to share updates, challenges, and successes while also accepting the reality that being on call at odd hours is highly probable. Establish a supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing their thoughts and concerns, even if it means rejecting ideas. Collaborate on solutions and ensure that everyone is on the same page regarding the goals and outcomes.

2. Work with what you have:
Recognize the limitations and constraints, and find creative ways to work within those parameters. Do you have a particular budget and you're short of it? What's the end goal and is it worth pursuing a mediocre product? can the community go without the information/project? If not, find a way to make it happen by utilizing existing resources efficiently and identifying alternative solutions when faced with limitations. Be adaptable!

3. Document everything:
Keep detailed records of your interactions, initiatives, and outcomes. Not only does this allow something to fall back on but it is essential for assessing the effectiveness of the efforts, identifying areas for improvement, and demonstrating the impact of your work to stakeholders and funders.

4. Keep the community at the forefront of your outcomes:
Constantly remind yourself and your team that the ultimate goal is to benefit the community. Regularly assess the impact of your initiatives on the community and gather feedback from colleagues and beneficiaries. By maintaining a community-centered approach, you ensure that your efforts align with the genuine needs of those you are working to support.

5. Have faith:
Perseverance often requires a strong belief in the positive impact that your work can have. Working in Africa, like anywhere, comes with accepting certain setbacks. Have faith in your team, keep the community in mind, and the potential for major changes. Celebrate small victories, learn from setbacks, and remain committed to your mission.

Our goal at The Okra Network is to foster strong relationships among non-profits and the communities they serve and we're just getting started!

At Watoto Wasoka, they celebrate yet another exciting and successful year of social impact through football in Uganda. Their health programs received prestigious awards; in October, they received the Sport Impact Awards in Dakar for the BUREF mental health program, and earlier in the year, they were awarded the iF Social Impact Prize as the designer of the Football 4 WASH program funded by their dear friends of Viva con Agua. But what is most important to them: despite significant financial challenges, they were able to again support 100 boys and girls through the WYLA Scholarship scheme, giving these kids access to quality primary and secondary education which they would otherwise not have had.

They have big plans for 2024, but are now excited to end 2023 on a high note: with the annual Watoto Wasoka Christmas Camp; a week of football, fun, food, and 2,500 kids from all over Uganda. From 28th December to 4th January, they shall again host 2,500 kids for a week filled with smiles, skills, celebrations, a joyous retreat from the harsh reality these kids are forced to call their daily lives. As always, girls’ football continues to be a big part of their work, and this year’s edition will be another opportunity to give girls the opportunity they duly deserve on and off the pitch.

Watoto Wasoka will accommodate, feed, and provide clean drinking water to all attending kids. Their team will organize daily sessions and matches for the kids and manage the camp to ensure that it becomes another harmonic and joyful event. However, to host a special and successful camp, they rely on monetary support for the expected costs:

Celebrating the culmination of our year, we successfully wrapped up the Amani Health Project pilot, marking the conclusion of our final project. Despite facing resource constraints, the pilot was a remarkable success, and credit goes to U-VOL Foundationvolfoundation and The Change Society Needs for their invaluable support.

Juggling the pilot amidst year-end responsibilities demanded heightened diligence and resourcefulness. Gratitude to everyone who played a part – it's through these partnerships that our growth persists!
