On Monday, June 10, our brother, Leonard Peltier will stand before a board of parole. Wrongly incarcerated for the last 47 years, Peltier, now 80, has the opportunity to right the wrong that was done to him all those years ago.
Leonard Peltier is an elder of our people who fought for American Indian rights, giving his freedom in the process. Many in Salt River and in the Phoenix area may not be aware of the close connection that he has with our Community. Several elders, young people at the time, were friends with Peltier and were involved in many of the American Indian Movement activities occurring just before the shootout of which Leonard Peltier was framed.
Those elders, Angelo "Angel" Martinez (Bot), Spencer "Bone" Fulwilder, Jeremiah Eschief (Bot), Meldon Fulwilder, David Montiel, Alida "Earth Feather" Montiel (Bot), Leon Manuel, Valentino “Buddy” Burns, and Brandon “Chatham” Scott (Bot), each being members of our Community, knew Peltier on a personal level and have lived with the stark truth that any of them could have been in Peltier’s and Joseph "Joe" Stunz’s (Bot) very position. Joe Stunz, having stayed behind to protect the elders, was killed by a US Marshals Sniper during the shootout at Jumping Bull's Camp.
As a show of their continued support, members of this group of elders are hosting a prayer gathering for Leonard Peltier. The gathering includes time for prayers, speakers, singing and dancing. Held on Sunday, June 9, 2024 from 6pm-10pm at Meldon Fulwilder’s residence located at 3009 N. Horne Rd., Mesa, AZ 85203. Please bring something to share for a potluck and your own chairs as seating is limited.
