I am so excited to announce that I have started my counseling internship in Arizona and can now accept (a limited number of) clients for supervised therapy!🪑❤️🪑

This is such an exciting and nerve wracking time, and I would be honored to spend it working with people who, like me, are learning to navigate life with a premenstrual disorder.

If you’d like to learn more about me or the many other incredible therapists listed in our PMDD Therapy Directory, go to the link in bio! ❤️

Raise your hand if you get the ick for your life when things are going suspiciously too well 👀🤨

This is not the case for everyone who struggles with quitting their jobs or leaving their partner during luteal phase! There are many things that can contribute to these experiences.

This is just one of many complex reasons why someone might struggle with stability or do things that hurt them.

Luckily, we have a whole directory of professionals who can help you work through this.

“When you realize in therapy you have don’t have to work on tolerating pain/trauma…
you have to work on tolerating calm.

You’ve gotten so used to chaos that you struggle feeling safe during moments of stability, and that’s why you self-sabotage so often during luteal phase.

Instead of first learning how to be present with your feelings, you had to learn how to survive. Your feelings came second. It wasn’t about emotional regulation, it was about keeping yourself safe. Chaos became the norm and you learned how to handle that really, really well.

So now, stability feels scary and foreign, and being mindful during moments of calm feels, ironically, destabilizing. Stability feels boring and you get a sense something is still “wrong”. So it becomes easier to create chaos than to feel stable.”

You are a whole, complex human being, not a diagnosis. You don’t have to prove your pain to deserve care.

You don’t have to fit neatly into the PMDD box to deserve help.

PMDD exists on a continuum. There is a spectrum of hormone sensitivity that looks different for everyone.

Some people react to rising hormones. Others react to the drop. Some feel it as rage, some as despair, some as total disconnection.

PMDD has a complex biopsychosocial cause that is unique for each individual. There are many possible pathways leading to a shared experience of cyclical emotional pain.

So if your symptoms don’t look “severe enough,” or they don’t fit the textbook, or they come and go in a pattern that feels inconsistent, you’re still valid.

Ever wonder why PMDD doesn’t respond the same for everyone? Or why your symptoms come and go at different times than other people?

PMDD isn’t a hormonal imbalance, it’s a brain-hormone interaction problem. And research now shows that PMDD doesn’t have one single cause, rather it’s a unique hormone sensitivity disorder that looks different for everyone.

The new DASH-MC model shows that people with PMDD don’t all share one biological cause. Some react to hormone rises, others to drops, and each pattern involves different brain pathways (serotonin, GABA, dopamine).

It’s not “in your head.” It’s how your brain and hormones talk to each other.

Understanding that difference is the key to better treatment, self-compassion, and real progress in menstrual mental health. 💛

Ever feel suddenly disconnected from your partner before your period, like everything they do irritates you or you just want space?

That emotional ick is not a sign the love is gone. Research shows people with PMDD experience drops in intimacy, trust, and passion during their luteal phase, even when love and commitment stay strong.

It is not you falling out of love, it is your hormones changing how you connect.

Give yourself permission to take space and reconnect when the wave passes. 💛

🔥🚨 Hot (evidence-based) take: if antihistamines *cured* your PMDD, it likely was not PMDD in the first place!

Differentiating between PMDD and other conditions is absolutely crucial for effective treatment. PMDD is a legitimate diagnosis that has to be understood outside of the social media hype.

The more we write off PMDD as “histamine intolerance + PMS” or “a variation of a personality disorder + toxic mold + heavy metals”, the more we delegitimize a real disorder and decrease a genuine understanding of PMDD & its etiology.

Can histamines increase PMDD symptoms? Yes. Can antihistamines decrease severity of symptoms? Yes, for some people. But will antihistamines put your PMDD in remission? Not likely.

That’s why speaking with a physician that is educated on PMDD and takes the time to understand your body is SO important for treating your personal symptoms.

Self care is not just what we do once in a while. It is how we show up for ourselves every day.

For Madison it looks like sunlight, mindful writing, and comfy clothes.
For me it is playlists, naps, and journalling.

These small rituals keep us grounded through PMDD and remind us that rest is a form of care.

We would love to know how you do self care. Tell us below or tag us in your post.
