Myths & facts about joining your campus labor union, United Campus Workers AZ CWA Local 7065:
MYTH 1: "Unions are illegal in Arizona, I'll get fired for joining!"
FACT: Unions aren't illegal!
Your right to belong and be active in a union or employees association is protected by state (AZ 12.1341) and federal law as well as the Arizona Board of Regents (6-906) policies. It is illegal, however, to be fired for joining a union. We are challenging power dynamics, so there is some risk. But collectively, we are more protected together than as individuals.
MYTH 2: "Collective bargaining is illegal in AZ, so joining UCWAZ is a waste of time."
FACT: Collective bargaining (or a contract with the employer) is not the only tool in the toolbox!
While current state laws say that union members in AZ can’t collectively bargain, we can still successfully organize through collective action! Minority unions in many other states without collective bargaining have won pay raises, secured job benefits, and fought off privatization efforts simply through organizing together.
MYTH 3: "Being in a union is a time-suck. I'm already too busy!"
FACT: Organizing isn't all-or-nothing!
You can be as involved or uninvolved as you want to be! If you have a couple hours a month, you can table or join a committee. If you have one hour a month, you can talk to a coworker. If you have ABSOLUTELY no time, you can pay your dues and leave it at that.
MYTH 4: Union dues are too expensive. I'm already being overworked and underpaid!"
FACT: Dues are on a sliding scale, based on your income!
You can pay as low as $10/month, or as high as you want to go. As we all know, money = power. Your dues pay for resources, training, swag, professional staff, and more. We even have a solidarity fund that other members contribute to that supports folks who aren’t able to afford dues.
Don’t let money be a barrier to collective power!
Today is a really good day to join your union. UCWArizona.org/join
