One of Donald Bassler's chores as a kid was filling empty glass oil bottles for his father at the family gas station.
He never forgot it. So years later he built the place from memory, and in 1998 he brought it to Community Day.
A scale model of the Mobil station his parents Harvey and Mildred ran in the early 1940s, right down to the Pegasus on the sign. The sign he lettered on it reads "Coopersburg, P.A. Small Town U.S.A."
And that is the whole thing, right there.
Thirty four years of people bringing what they made and what they remember to a field on Fairmount Street.
The rest of 1998 looked like this. Draft horses hitched for wagon rides. Quilts spread out in the grass. VFW Post 3405 cooking. Locust Valley Chapel with a booth. A row of Model T's.
The tradition continues. September 19. Three weeks out.
Does anyone know where that model ended up? 🤔
