My neighbor, who I haven't chatted with in months, stops me on the way to the recycling bin yesterday. He seemed nervous and distracted at the same time. Then, he whispered, "When you said the world would get worst in 2023-2024, last year, did you know something that rest of us didn't?"
I told him,"Not at all..." Then he asks,"Are you one of the real Israelites?" I asked him,"What do you believe?"
He proceeds to tell me of all the information he's been hearing, reading, and seeing. He tells me he's scared and seemed to be looking to me for answers. My spirit said to keep quiet. I don't know why, but I was led to share the following video that I had watched earlier in the day. I just told him to watch the historical video sand that I hope he feels better. I also told him to pray about what he's experienced.

On the evening of November 5, 1968, Shirley Chisholm became the first Black woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. As a former nursery school teacher, Chisholm always centered the needs of young people in her politics.

She fought for Head Start, an early education program begun under LBJ. She also co-founded the Congressional Black Caucus and advocated for the Equal Rights Amendment.

"Unbought and Unbossed," as read one of her famous campaign slogans, is how many today still remember Chisholm. In 1972, she became the first Black woman to campaign for the Democratic Party presidential nomination. Though she did not secure her party's candidacy, she didn't consider her campaign a failure. “I am and always will be a catalyst for change,' she said. She would go on to serve another 11 years in Congress.

We welcome the news that California will require students to complete an Ethnic Studies course to graduate from high school. According to reporting by Politico, "The state's ethnic studies framework, approved in March, promotes 'a social consciousness' and will address 'institutionalized systems of advantage' and forms of bigotry including anti-Blackness, xenophobia and anti-Semitism."

Take some time today to read ProPublica's investigative reporting on the incarceration of youth—and especially Black youth— in Rutherford County, . As reporting indicates, "among cases referred to juvenile court, the [Tennessee] average for how often children were locked up was 5% In Rutherford County, it was 48%."

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE HEALTHY.

Recently published research conducted by Dr. Paula Braveman, director of the Center on Social Disparities in Health at the University of California-San Francisco, shows that "Black women are about 1.6 times as likely as whites to give birth more than three weeks before the due date." Her research suggests that this statistic "bears alarming and costly health consequences, as infants born prematurely are at higher risk for breathing, heart and brain abnormalities, among other complications."
