By offering programs like tutoring, workshops, and college placement assistance, PUBS has supported thousands of families across Philadelphia and beyond.

Community Engagement and Civic Responsibility at MCSCS

At MCSCS, community service is more than just a requirement—it’s a way of life. Every Thursday, students volunteer to help feed the homeless in Philadelphia, contributing to a cause that has been part of the school’s mission since 2005. From raising money for cancer research to supporting voter registration, MCSCS fosters a culture of civic responsibility that reaches far beyond the classroom.

Students from grades 1 through 12 contribute $1 per week, helping raise funds for meals and essential items like toiletries and clothing for homeless citizens. This weekly project not only meets immediate needs but also reinforces values of empathy, teamwork, and social justice among students.

MCSCS organizes annual fundraisers that support causes such as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the American Cancer Society. In addition, the Veronica Joyner Scholarship Fund helps cover textbook, dorm, and transportation costs for MCSCS graduates who are pursuing higher education.

The community initiatives at MCSCS, led by students and staff, are evidence of the school’s commitment to civic duty and social change. By instilling these values in students, MCSCS ensures that its graduates not only excel academically but are prepared to contribute meaningfully to society.

Celebrating the Legacy of Veronica Joyner and MCSCS

Since its founding in 1999, The Mathematics, Civics and Sciences Charter School (MCSCS) has established itself as a beacon of educational excellence in Philadelphia. Under the visionary leadership of Veronica Joyner, MCSCS boasts a 100% graduation rate and an impressive college attendance rate. Joyner’s dedication to creating opportunities for all students has set a powerful example, inspiring educational advocacy and change across the region.

Veronica Joyner began her career as a public school teacher in Philadelphia, where she witnessed the need for a stronger community-driven approach to education. In 1984, she founded Parents United for Better Schools (PUBS), laying the groundwork for MCSCS. Her legacy has been marked by numerous achievements, from the Gates Millennium Scholarship winners to the Veronica Joyner Scholarship Fund, which continues to support college students.

MCSCS has consistently ranked among the top schools in Philadelphia, recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education for its rigorous academic programs. With thousands of students graduating with high marks, MCSCS continues to prepare students for lifelong success.

MCSCS students actively engage in community service as part of their Civics curriculum. Weekly outreach includes feeding 500 homeless individuals, organizing bottled water drives, and hosting voter registration events. The school emphasizes not just academic success but a strong sense of social responsibility, showing students the impact they can have on the world around them.

The legacy of Veronica Joyner and the achievements of MCSCS are a testament to the power of community and the difference one dedicated leader can make. Joyner’s vision for accessible and excellent education lives on, inspiring students, families, and educators alike.
