Freire Schools

Freire Schools is committed to ensuring that every single student who walks through our doors can succeed and grow. Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA

We provide a college and professional-prep learning experience with a focus on individual freedom, critical thinking, and problem-solving. We provide students in underserved communities a college-prep learning experience focused on individual freedom, critical thinking, and problem solving in an environment that emphasizes community, teamwork, and a commitment to peace. We are four distinct schools in two different cities, each guided by the same values of equity, diversity, love, and critical thinking. Freire Schools students are confident, dynamic, and collaborative individuals. They are engaged in their communities, and excited to apply the skills and knowledge they acquire with Freire to create new possibilities for our futures. Of Freire Schools’ 2,000 total students, 89% are Black or Latinx, and almost all students qualify as economically disadvantaged. We combine high expectations with robust supports to provide each Freire student with the challenges and resources they need to succeed. 92% of 2019 Freire Schools graduates were accepted to college, and 86% of college-enrolled Freire Schools graduates persist to their second year of college (compared to the national average of 74%). Today, we celebrate the birthday of the educator whose ideas continue to shape who we are.

Happy birthday to our namesake, Paulo Freire!

Born in Recife, Brazil, on September 19, 1921, Freire believed education could be a powerful force for connection, curiosity, and change. He challenged educators to see students not simply as recipients of knowledge, but as active participants in shaping their own learning and understanding the world around them.

That belief is at the heart of Freire Schools. We want our students to ask questions, think critically, find their voices, and understand that they have the power to shape their communities and their futures.

Above quote posted at Freire Wilmington.

Three days of stunts, skills, teamwork, and plenty of Dragon pride!

This summer, Freire High cheerleaders had an amazing opportunity to attend a 3-day commuter stunt camp with the National Cheerleaders Association , where they learned new skills, challenged themselves, and had so much fun bonding as a team.

And a special congratulations to Varsity Cheerleader Khalimah W., who was named to the All-American Cheer Squad!

We’re so proud of Khalimah and all of our cheerleaders for representing Freire with pride!
