When the Irish arrived in America to signs reading No Irish Need Apply, they did not wait around for a welcome. 🇮🇪 They built their own, and one of the oldest expressions of that is the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
Founded in New York in 1836, the Hibernians grew from a simple, powerful idea. In a country where the Irish were often poor, Catholic and unwanted, they would look after their own. The order protected Irish immigrants and their churches, offered a hand to the newly arrived, provided a little insurance against sickness and death when no one else would, and kept Irish culture and faith alive far from home. Through the hardest decades it was a lifeline, a network of neighbours who understood exactly where you had come from and what you were up against.
Nearly two centuries on it still marches at the head of St Patrick's Day parades across America. 💚 A living reminder that the diaspora did not just survive, it organised, and it never forgot its own.
