TODAY, Tuesday, Oct. 3
Dr. Elizabeth Kelly Gray will speak on her book Habit Forming: Drug Addiction in America, 1776–1914 (Oxford University Press, 2022) at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, in the ETC Auditorium of Holy Family University as part of the Glen Foerd-Holy Family University Speaker Series.
Dr. Gray’s book explores the history of habit-forming drugs in the United States in the 18th and 19th centuries, when regulation was ineffective at the state level and non-existent at the national level. Americans consumed hashish candy, injected morphine, visited o***m dens for pleasure, and used co***ne and he**in as medicine. While the consumers were mostly well-to-do white people who bought their drugs at drugstores few Americans thought regulation or criminalization necessary, but as drug use became more associated with lower class young men, support for a federal drug law grew, culminating in the Progressive-era Harrison Narcotic Tax Act that limited sales of opiates and co***ne. Dr. Gray will focus on the history of drug use and regulation in Philadelphia in her talk.
Kelly Gray earned a BA at Bryn Mawr College, and a Ph.D. in History at the College of William and Mary. She is professor of history at Towson University in Maryland, where her specialty is nineteenth-century America. Her current book project focuses on antebellum Baltimore.
The lecture series is free and open to the public, with no reservations required. Dr. Gray’s talk will be simulcast on Zoom.

Glen Foerd-Holy Family University Speaker Series to Feature Andrew Diemer, Author of 'Vigilance: The Life of William Still, Father of the Underground Railroad.'

Holy Family University and Glen Foerd on the Delaware will co-host a Speaker Series event featuring Andrew Diemer, associate professor of history at Towson University and author of Vigilance: The Life of William Still, Father of the Underground Railroad (Knopf, 2022).

The live event will be held on Thursday, April 13, at 7:00 p.m. EDT in the Education and Technology Center Auditorium of Holy Family University (9801 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19114). The event is free and open to the public. The talk will be simulcast via Zoom.

William Still was born free in New Jersey in 1821 to parents who had escaped from slavery. Moving to Philadelphia in 1844, he was hired by the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society; eventually, he became head of its Vigilance Committee that aided escaped slaves. Still documented the stories of the men, women, and children that he assisted in their transit to freedom in hopes of eventually reuniting them with family and friends. Once, while listening to the story of an escaped slave named Peter, Still recognized that this was his own brother, whom he had never before met, and whom his mother had had to leave behind when she had fled from slavery with her daughters. Among the other people Still assisted to freedom were the parents of Harriet Tubman, and Ellen and William Craft, who disguised themselves as a young white man and his slave in order to free themselves. Still published the valuable account of his work in 1872. Still also invested in coal and real estate during the Civil War, and left at his death a fortune worth between $100,000 and $1 million.

The lecture is part of the Glen Foerd-Holy Family University Speaker Series that showcases topics of area cultural and historical interest. All lectures are free and open to the public. Copies of Vigilance will be available for purchase and signing at the event.

There is no need to register for the event if you are attending in person; if you are attending via Zoom, you may register here:

Glen Foerd-Holy Family University Speaker Series Features
Aaron Sullivan, Author of The Disaffected: Britain's Occupation of Philadelphia, Thursday, Nov. 10, 7:00 pm, ETC Auditorium of Holy Family University.
Holy Family University and Glen Foerd on the Delaware will co-host a Speaker Series event featuring historian Aaron Sullivan, author of The Disaffected: Britain's Occupation of Philadelphia (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2019), which the American Revolution Round Table of Philadelphia named the best book on the American Revolution Era in 2019.

The live event will be held on Thursday, November 10, at 7:00 pm EST in the ETC Auditorium of Holy Family University, and is free and open to the public. The talk will be simulcast via Zoom.

Sullivan explores the British occupation of Philadelphia during the American Revolution, chronicling the experiences of a group of people who were pursued, pressured, and at times persecuted, not because they chose the wrong side of the Revolution but because they tried not to choose a side at all. For these people, the war was neither a glorious cause to be won nor an unnatural rebellion to be suppressed, but a dangerous and costly calamity to be navigated with care. Both the Patriots and the British referred to this group as "the disaffected," perceiving correctly that their defining feature was less loyalty to than a lack of support for either side in the dispute, and denounced them as opportunistic, apathetic, or even treasonous. Dr. Sullivan will sign copies of his book, which will be available for purchase at the event.

The lecture is part of the Glen Foerd-Holy Family University Speaker Series that showcases topics of area cultural and historical interest. All lectures are free and open to the public.

Dr. Aaron Sullivan is Instructor of history at Rider University. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from LeTourneau University and a PhD in History from Temple University. He has received awards and fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies, the Pennsylvania State Society Daughters of the American Colonists, and the David Library of the American Revolution.

In honor of Black History Month, Jack McCarthy will present a lecture on African American abolitionist and civil rights activist Robert Purvis (1810-1898), one of Northeast Philadelphia’s most compelling historical figures. During the 30-some years he lived in Byberry (1840s-1870s) Purvis made the community a well-known center of abolitionism and social activism, while continuing his clandestine Underground Railroad activities. In 1846-1847 he spearheaded the building of Byberry Hall (still standing), which hosted nationally-known speakers to discuss anti-slavery and social issues of the time.
