Medical Mission Sisters decided that Earth Day would be the appropriate day to “acknowledge, celebrate, and release” our property in Fox Chase, Philadelphia. We gathered today to share memories, hopes, prayers and singing in appreciation and love for the beautiful land we have lived on for over 95 years!

Today we celebrated the 100th birthday of dear Sister Jeanette McDermott! A prayer, written by Associate Marge Sexton, included these words: "From her childhood on a farm in Iowa, to her work as a nurse midwife and in hospice care, she has brought life into the world and gently accompanied others at life's end." Wherever Sister Jeanette is, she brings warmth and kindness with generous hugs and smiles. Happy birthday, Sister Jeanette!

Sing out to Mary, Cause of our Joy! Bless us today and always. Amen.

What can the Holy One do with dust?

What can the Holy One do with dust?

In a time when so much is crumbling, is burning, I don’t want to romanticize the ashes that come with destruction and devastation. As we approach Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent, I do want to keep asking what the Holy One can do with dust, and to keep looking for how I can be part of that. So many blessings to you, beloved ones, as the new season arrives.

BLESSING THE DUST

All those days
you felt like dust,
like dirt,
as if all you had to do
was turn your face
toward the wind
and be scattered
to the four corners

or swept away
by the smallest breath
as insubstantial—

did you not know
what the Holy One
can do with dust?

This is the day
we freely say
we are scorched.

This is the hour
we are marked
by what has made it
through the burning.

This is the moment
we ask for the blessing
that lives within
the ancient ashes,
that makes its home
inside the soil of
this sacred earth.

So let us be marked
not for sorrow.
And let us be marked
not for shame.
Let us be marked
not for false humility
or for thinking
we are less
than we are

but for claiming
what God can do
within the dust,
within the dirt,
within the stuff
of which the world
is made
and the stars that blaze
in our bones
and the galaxies that spiral
inside the smudge
we bear.

Sister Mary Grace Tirkey teaches tailoring to local women in Rajabala, West Garo Hills, Meghalaya. Last week Medical Mission Sisters in Northeast India celebrated 50 years of dedicated service, compassion and commitment to the health and overall development of the people. The village community cooked and served all the food for the large gathering, donating pigs, cows, goats, rice and many other items, reflecting their deep gratitude and love for MMS. Sister Badashmiti Jalong shared, “the jubilee celebration was truly grand, meaningful and grace-filled!” Photo credit: Sr. Yumiko Nobue

In the wake of the horrific violence in our country and throughout the world, Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) has issued a statement, Choosing Nonviolence as Gospel Witness. MMS is joining other congregations who have committed to one or more days of Prayer, Fasting and Advocacy over a 100 day period. Our day of commitment is March 24. Please join us in praying and working for peace.

At this moment in history, when fear is normalized, violence is amplified, and democratic life is under strain in the United States and across the world, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) raises a clear and unwavering moral voice: violence is not the Gospel response.
