The Pedal Coop

The Pedal Coop Pedalers are working to promote means of alternative transportation, contribute to a zero-waste society, increase urban food access, learn, teach, & grow!

04/05/2013

Effective Friday, April 5th, the Pedal Co-op will be suspending our compost pick-up service.

Begining in phases over the next two weeks, Bennett Compost will be taking over our weekly compost pickup routes. We are coordinating the transfer with Bennett Compost to make this transition as seamless as possible. We are very happy to be working with our new friends at Bennett Compost, a locally owned business with values that align well with our values of zero waste, urban composting, local economies, and food access.

Many of you may be aware that the Pedal Co-op has been operating with a completely new team since mid-December. In these 3 months, we've had a lot of experiential education, and met some wonderful people who are passionate about bicycles, composting, and our city. We have done a lot to streamline our operations, and now find ourselves ready to showcase bicycles in other ways. Look for us on the streets, modeling bicycle-based businesses and infrastructure, advocating urban bicycle use, and working to expand the public consciousness of bicycles.

Please be on the lookout for an email from Bennett Compost advising you when to switch to Wednesday night pickups.

We truly want your input about what we did well, what we could do better and most importantly, what services you'd like to see offered by bike. Share your thoughts publicly on our page, and Like us to follow our evolution.

Again, thank you all for your support now and over the years. We hope everyone will continue to support us in our new endeavors, perhaps not as customers but as friends and collaborators.

Should the Pedal Co-op form a Glean Team and start a Glean Plate program in Philly?

Glean Teams are helping to prevent hunger by recovering food that might otherwise go to waste, and donating 100 percent of it to agencies serving those in need.

On any given weekday, one or two riders from its four-member staff are on the streets collecting recycling from Center City, Fairmount and West Philly businesses—which can reach 8,000 gallons a month on average—or compost from West Philly residents. All recycling is transported to South Philly’s Blu...
