NRHS The NRHS has several premier programs which consume a significant portion of the Societies resources annually.

The NRHS seeks to preserve historical material concerning railway transportation of all kinds; to issue publications relating to rail history; and to support the industry by funding preservation initiatives through the NRHS's Heritage Grants Program. These include our Heritage Grants Program, RailCamp and our publications. The NRHS's Heritage Grants Program provides a funding mechanism for organiz

ations in the Rail Heritage Industry to seek financial support. Organizations can apply for a Grant once per year which is evaluated by the Heritage Grants Committee for funding. Since the programs inception 1991, the NRHS has provided in excess of $1,000,000 in financial awards to rail preservation organizations throughout North America. RailCamp is an educational experience for high school students who have an interest in railroads and railroading. The program is designed to teach students about 21st century railroad operations, dispatching, and maintenance while providing a simultaneous experience in the early history of U.S. railroads in the development and settlement of our country. Students will learn both modern and historic elements of America’s most vital transportation mode, including how diesel, electric, and steam locomotives function, how track is built and maintained and how early freight and passenger cars were constructed. With a focus on the ways in which revolutionary technical changes in modern railroading affect today’s business, students will attend a week-long camp where they will participate in railroad operations, interact with railroaders, learn about preservation techniques, experience railroad history, career opportunities, and work with real railroad equipment. Our publications are recognized nationally for their coverage of railroad history in North America and the preservation work done by many of our Chapters, which operate at the local level. The NRHS bulletin is a 40-page, full-color, quarterly publication that brings a wide range of rail history topics to our members and many outside the Society. The NRHS News is primarily an electronic publication published 6 times a year that covers the preservation activities and accomplishments of our 100+ Chapters.

Depending on which state supplies information on the rail service, Texas or Oklahoma, it seems that the Heartland Flyer's days are numbered unless last minute funds can be cobbled togethere, again.
