Feed Philly Coalition

Feed Philly Coalition Feed Philly Coalition is an advocacy group that helps fight against hunger & promotes a culture of food upcycling.

We are a collaborative effort of food rescues, soup kitchens, restaurants, & food retailers that strive to reduce food insecurity in Philly.

One thing is clear.

If good food can be rescued, it should not be going to a landfill.

This is not complicated. It is practical, efficient, and achievable. Philadelphia has the people, the partners, and the urgency to do more.

Food rescue is doable. We should act like it.

Nobody says they're hungry. They just don't eat.

That's the part the numbers can't capture.

The USDA's most recent report puts 47.9 million Americans in food insecure households. It is the last report the federal government plans to issue. As of late 2025, the administration announced it will no longer collect the data needed to produce it going forward.

So we are entering a period where the official count stops at the very moment researchers are telling us the count was already too low.

Peer-reviewed studies have consistently found that food insecurity is underreported when measured over longer time intervals. A 2026 study published in Academic Pediatrics found significant underreporting of food insecurity at nine-month intervals compared to monthly tracking. The USDA's own methodology acknowledges the possibility of underreporting, particularly for more severe food-insecure conditions.

And then there's the piece the surveys can't reach at all.

Shame.

Research from the Food Research and Action Center and the Center for Research in Education and Social Policy documents how stigma actively prevents people from reporting hunger or seeking assistance. People feed their children first and tell themselves they weren't that hungry. They skip meals rather than stand in a food pantry line where someone might recognize them. They answer survey questions the way they wish their lives looked, not the way their lives actually are.

Nearly 39 percent of food-insecure individuals in one study said they didn't seek help because of fear, shame, or embarrassment.

We are measuring a crisis using a tool the crisis itself distorts. And we are building food policy around the result.

This is what the I AM HUNGRY documentary project is about. Not a sanitized portrait of hunger. Not statistics on a slide. The real story. The gap between what gets counted and what is actually happening.

The number is bigger than 47.9 million. We just have to be willing to say so.

312,000 hungry Philadelphians. Right now.

That number makes zero sense. But it can change.

Feed Philly Coalition. All hands. This time we get something done.

Today we honor Martin Luther King Jr. — not with platitudes, but with honesty.

Dr. King didn’t just talk about dreams. He talked about poverty. He talked about hunger.
He talked about the moral failure of a society that lets people go without while abundance sits untouched.

He said, “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.”
I’d add this: injustice in access to food is right there with it.

Because you can’t learn, work, heal, or dream on an empty stomach.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth — we produce more than enough food. Yet millions of Americans are food insecure. Tons of edible food are thrown away every single day. That’s not an accident. That’s a system failure.

And systems don’t change themselves. People change them.

So today, instead of pointing fingers, I’m pointing one right back at myself. I need to do more. Louder. Smarter. Faster. Less talking, more doing.

Dr. King believed justice required action, structure, and courage — not charity alone.

If we really want to honor him, we don’t just quote him once a year. We build systems that reflect his values every damn day.

Today is a reminder. Tomorrow is a responsibility.

I’m in. Who else is?

A decade ago when we started forming our 501(c)(3), we recognized that tackling food insecurity required true collaboration.

Now, the Feed Philly Coalition is 26 organizations strong and working together to solve this problem for real. What started as a vision is finally coming to fruition. 🙏

Trying to fix a broken food system takes more than good intentions. Feed Philly Coalition is in the rooms where policy, access, and real change begin. Still fighting, still pushing, still showing up every day.

Honored. Humbled. Fired up.

On behalf of the Economy League of Greater Philadelphia, the Feed Philly Coalition, and the Bynum Hospitality Group, I’m beyond proud to be a part of the The Mayor & City Council's Food & Nutrition Security Task Force.

This isn’t just another committee. This is a citywide call to action — bringing together leaders from every corner of Philadelphia to tackle the urgent and complex issues of hunger, nutrition, access, equity, and systemic change.

The stakes are high — SNAP benefits are under attack, food insecurity is on the rise, and too many of our neighbors are falling through the cracks. But so is the talent, passion, and brainpower in this group.

We’re not here for optics. We’re here to develop real solutions, push bold policies, protect and empower communities, and make sure Philly leads the way nationally in fighting food injustice.

Let’s go.

What. A. Day.

My brother and I had the absolute honor of working alongside the brilliant, badass, and wildly talented chefs (and people) of Double Trellis — a powerhouse of a kitchen and one of Philly’s most inspiring culinary incubators.

To say we were humbled would be an understatement. These folks don’t just cook — they craft. Every dish, every flavor, every detail… executed with passion, purpose, and precision. The energy in that kitchen? Electric. The teamwork? Seamless. The food? Let’s just say Michelin should acknowledge if you ask me.

Massive love and respect to Matt, Adrian, and the ENTIRE crew at Double Trellis — the ones who show up and put in the work day in and day out. What you’ve built is special. What you’re doing is necessary. What you represent is the future.

Deep gratitude to our friends at The Enterprise Center — your support of local foodpreneurs makes this kind of magic possible. And huge shoutout to Sharing Excess and Craversville Farm Foundation for supplying the gorgeous, vibrant, raw ingredients that became the flavorful meals we proudly plated.

Together, we didn’t just cook — we created. And we’re just getting started. 🍽️💥

Fueling the Future, One Breakfast at a Time

At Feed Philly Coalition, we believe food is more than fuel — it’s dignity, connection, and power. That’s why we’re proud as hell to support the amazing work of The Eco Center right here in Philadelphia.
The Eco Center is rewriting what community support looks like — one plate, one purpose, one act of radical love at a time.

Today they open their doors to offer free breakfast to young people and neighbors in need — no red tape, no performative pity. Just real food and genuine care.
🍽️ Hot meals for those who need it most
🌱 Education around sustainability and growing your own
💚 A space where community is not just welcomed — it’s celebrated

This is what food justice in action looks like.

To Kyle, Bella, and the entire Eco Center fam:

We see you. We salute you. We’re proud to stand beside you.

📢 Shoutout to the amazing Waialua Community Association! 🌍💙

While I was away, I had the honor of volunteering with Linda & her incredible team—feeding those in need every Wednesday. It’s a reminder that even in places of luxury, many people still struggle.

Much love to my parents, local military, and fellow volunteers who showed up to help! If you have time or a few dollars to spare, consider giving back. 🙌
