India has a beautiful history of celebrating menstruation through culture and tradition.

From Ambubachi Mela in Assam, which celebrates the annual menstruation of Goddess Kamakhya, to other traditions across India that acknowledge the menstrual cycle as a powerful part of life and creation, our culture has found meaningful ways to recognize what is often treated as a taboo.

Menstruation is not something new or shameful. It has been part of human life since the beginning of humanity, and our traditions have often reflected that understanding.

This month, Girl Power USA celebrates these traditions and the message behind them: menstruation is natural, powerful, and worthy of being spoken about openly.

“Across the world, there is a woman just like me.”

Angelina Jolie’s words ask us to imagine the woman whose life could have looked completely different if she had been born somewhere else.

A woman in Afghanistan who wants to study, but is denied access to education. A woman in Yemen navigating conflict, poverty, and violence. A woman in Sudan living through war and displacement. A woman in Saudi Arabia whose opportunities and freedoms have changed significantly, yet who still faces barriers shaped by gender and social expectations.

Different countries. Different circumstances. But the same fundamental hopes: safety, dignity, education, family, freedom, and the chance to decide what happens to her own life.

Conversations around periods are often met with silence, discomfort, and stigma.

This month, Girl Power USA is putting menstrual health in the spotlight and dedicating our resources to making these conversations easier, louder, and more accessible.

As part of this campaign, we recently donated reusable menstrual pads to 30 schoolgirls, helping make menstrual hygiene a little more accessible and dignified. And this is only the beginning.

We are committed to supporting more girls through awareness, education, and access to menstrual hygiene products.

“Be dramatic, it’s just a period.”

Just a period?

Let’s talk about what is actually happening.

Each menstrual cycle, hormones prepare the body for a possible pregnancy. The lining of the uterus, the endometrium, thickens to create a nutrient-rich environment where a fertilized egg could implant.

Then, around the middle of the cycle, an o***y releases an egg. This is ovulation. The egg travels through a fallopian tube toward the uterus.

If s***m fertilizes the egg, pregnancy can begin. If fertilization does not happen, the egg breaks down and the hormone levels that maintained the uterine lining fall.

The lining is no longer needed. It breaks down and leaves the uterus through the cervix, passes through the va**na, and exits the body as menstrual blood and tissue.

That is a period.

It isn’t dirty. It isn’t shameful. It isn’t something to hide.

It is the visible part of a complex biological cycle that happens in the reproductive system.

So yes, let’s be dramatic about it.

Let’s be dramatic about educating people. Let’s be dramatic about menstrual health. Let’s be dramatic about ending the shame around something completely biological.

Because understanding menstruation is not “too much information.” It’s basic health education.
