Access to contraception was tightly controlled. Reproductive choices were limited. Social expectations often dictated how women should live, work, and make decisions about their own bodies.

The history of women’s rights is a reminder that progress is not automatic. Rights that seem ordinary today were fought for by generations of women who challenged laws, norms, and systems that denied them autonomy.

Looking back is not just about understanding the past.

A generation of Afghan women grew up believing education could change their future.

Many became students, teachers, doctors, writers, and dreamers.

Today, millions of Afghan girls are being denied the right to continue that journey. Afghanistan remains the only country in the world where girls are barred from secondary and higher education. More than 2.6 million girls have been affected by these restrictions since 2021.

But the story of Afghan women is not only one of loss.

It is also one of resilience.

Despite barriers, many continue to learn through informal classes, community networks, and extraordinary determination. They continue to fight for a future in which every girl can enter a classroom without fear and leave it with a world of possibilities.

This September, Girl Power USA is highlighting the power of education and standing with girls everywhere whose right to learn is still being denied.
