We had a great time this weekend at Tacony Creek Park with TTF Watershed Partnership and Olney Culture Lab being with community and celebrating music and the outdoors. ICB was able to take some cool folks on their first bird walks and gave away some free swag. It was so encouraging to see so many folks come through with their burning birding questions. We are continuing to champion the idea that BIRDING IS FOR EVERYONE. This event was a true representation of that. Kudos to Tianna from our events committee holding down the table during the bird walks and taking some sweet photos. Check out her great poetry at Tianna Godsey | poet !

We know you LOVE the birds. But did you know the homies at In Color Birding are one of a group of grantees tasked with planting trees around Philly over the next three years?

We are looking to plant trees that meet the needs of communities and the birds! We are birders so we are going to try and put our spin on it for sure! Let us know in the comments if you have a space in Philly that needs trees!

Last week we had the chance to meet our grantor Justice Outside and share ideas! We got to do a journaling hike with Hike+Heal Wellness LLC 🥾🐝🍯 and then get some tree knowledge from Andrew Conboy

Book club was amazing. We spent some time with one another at Science & Wellness of FLP eating some snacks and discussing Better Living Through Birding by Christian Cooper. We even had a surprise zoom guest and Christian Cooper himself chatted with folks for the last half hour.

The book proved to be a moving story for many in the room. Themes around parental relationships and how birding can add volume and color to our lives, even in the midst of challenges throughout our journeys.

We had the honor of returning to Stenton Museum last month. The grounds are just as lovely as they’ve always been. There was a great hue of autumn among the shaded meadow and the trees held mostly green with a little tinge of change. We are so thankful to be welcomed once again by the staff there. We wondered at a curious Eastern Wood Pewee and chuckled at some Northern Flickers. Folks were delighted at intimate views of the flickers in good light. We were able to study the plumage and that delighted many. Looking forward to getting back there again soon. Please consider a visit and get all the info you need at Stenton.org

We are so saddened to hear about the closing of Academy of Natural Sciences after 200 years. It’s a sad day for the city of Philadelphia.

As the pictures show, this institution, and its people, were and are an important part of the story of Philadelphia and of In Color Birding. The Academy hosted a number of film screenings, guest speakers like David Lindo Dexter Patterson Christian Cooper and most recently Isaiah E. Scott . This was the center of spring birding for a number of years as we celebrated with panels and guest speakers like Corina Newsome Cam Tykee James Katrina Clark Maria Andreina Pacheco Tanya Burnett and brianna a. . There were full bird exhibits fit to explore the intersection of birding and history in this city. It is a place many of us came to celebrate our full diversity in science and ornithology/birding. We will miss our time planning such events with Sean Snaks Stallworth Mariah Romaninsky and others. We hope Drexel University can reconsider and if not we hope the institution can find a path forward with new leadership and financial support. One that can sustain and value its place in the community as a place of learning rather than a point of revenue. This city deserves better Governor Josh Shapiro and Mayor Cherelle L. Parker

What a great morning to get back after it following a pretty hot summer. In Color Birding rolled with 18 beautiful people; some new birders and some new guests of ICB! The weather started overcast with a little breeze. As the day went along the humidity set in, the breeze tempered, and the sun came out. Folks continued nonetheless and we were treated to Blue Grosbeak and Indigo Bunting. A number of Great Blue Heron flyovers and one dangerous encounter with an Eastern Cicada Killer (Sphecius speciosus) later, we had tallied 31 species!

We have missed you all so much!!!

Thank you for being gracious as our board and events committee took a summer break to recalibrate, rest, and prepare for big things to come.

Take a look at our upcoming outings including two outing specifically to gauge interest in a new YOUNG BIRDERS CLUB! Outings through 9/5 and the book club are posted. Remaining outings will be available for RSVP by 8/30!
