PA Groundhogs recently received a submission of something that was purchased as a Xanax. The participant was concerned based on their personal experience with the substance, they are not naive to benzodiazepines, however when they took this they blacked out and lost several hours with zero recollection. They strip tested and found it to be negative for fentanyl and xylazine and positive for benzodiazpines and medetomidine. PAG provided guidance and assistance on test strip procedures to ensure that the strips were being used correctly. The medetomdine positive result was extremely disconcerting and once the team received the sample we prioritized the testing. As always, our partners at worked swiftly and diligently in order to provide accurate results as to what was in the substance. PAG was alerted that there was in fact medetomidine in the xanax.
PAG was able to provide results to the individual who submitted. We want to stress that medetomidine is not a benzodiazpine and that the combination of benzo and mede can lead to some serious acute adverse health outcomes.
