It is an exciting time at the Kensington Corridor Trust and for the Avenue! πŸŽ‰

We are thrilled to announce that we were recently awarded a $1,500,000 grant through Pennsylvania's Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) to renovate 3360-70 Kensington Avenue. The work includes ground-floor commercial spaces paired with affordable upper-floor residential rentals and ADA-accessible units. This will activate a large portion of the block upon completion and, most importantly, keep it in the community's hands.

We want to extend our gratitude to Senator Tina Tartaglione's and Rep. Jose Giral's offices for their support throughout this process, and are looking forward to what's to come!

Kensington Corridor Trust was proud to stand with Transit for All PA and Philadelphians from across the city for a 24-hour SEPTA ride this week, a bold action to push back on proposed transit cuts and fare increases.

Billy Penn covered the day, including remarks from our own Gloria "Smooches" Cartagena Hart on what SEPTA's Key card access means for Kensington families and what's at stake as school starts back up.

Our garden is filled with carpenter bees 🐝, busy and buzzing all around to get work done for their hive. They may be small, but their workforce is mighty; a reminder to us all that no matter the size, there is power in numbersβ€”that we are stronger together. πŸ’ͺ🏽

Please come by throughout the week and take a peak at what’s bloomed, including two favorites: mountain mint and bee balm!

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate this milestone with us, and to all those who have supported this journey over the last few years. It meant so much to have you there!

The doors are open to the public starting today, 7am to 3pm, at 3462 Kensington Avenue. πŸ›’

If you have spent any time on Kensington Avenue, you already know J Centrel. It is the big former textile mill at J Street and the Ave, with apartments upstairs and storefronts at street level. Some of y'all might remember when it was the Diamond Furniture (the big brick and yellow spot)! Right now, it is for sale, and we have a real chance to buy it back for the neighborhood.

KCT is raising the funds to bring J Centrel into our neighborhood trust. It is the same model we have used to move 32 assets on the corridor into community hands since 2019. Once a building is placed into the trust, it stays there. It cannot be flipped or sold off to the highest bidder, and the rents stay affordable. More importantly, the community maintains control perpetually (forever)!

We have until August 28th to raise $20 million, and we are closer than you might think. Every dollar moves us forward, and no amount is too small. If this neighborhood has ever felt like home to you, here is your chance to help keep it that way. πŸ«±πŸ½β€πŸ«²πŸ½
